I missed it but the Grammy website says the pre-awards show will be available to watch in its entirety for the next month.
It deserved to be either ITH or SOUTH PACIFIC.
ITH was beautifully produced (and is also the first recording of this innovative and truly wonderful score) so it deserved it.
I have to plug SOUTH PACIFIC's OBCR here and say if you haven't purchased it yet, do it. I enjoyed the show but didn't think it was as masterful as everyone claims it to be (GYPSY was a better revival IMO) but the OBCR is undoubtedly fantastic. In my mind it might be the finest recording of the score to date...which is saying a lot.
Slightly off topic but related, the Sweeney Todd film soundtrack did not win for the soundtrack/compilation album - that went to Juno.
I actually thought it was going to be between IN THE HEIGHTS and GYPSY. I love the sound quality on both of those recordings, while SOUTH PACIFIC sounded better in the theater to me.
In any case, didn't SPRING AWAKENING (Best Musical 2007) win the Grammy last year? And IN THE HEIGHTS (Best Musical 200 won this year. Do I see a trend developing?
I didn't get to see the shows nominated but have been listening to the recordings. In The Heights is ok but got a bit redundant half way through. I figure I need to actually see the show to appreciate all of the music.

A great year for cast recordings. Personally, I would've gone with the lush, ultimate Gypsy recording (even though I like In the Heights better).
It's usually the BEST MUSICAL winner that wins the GRAMMY.
Or the biggest hit of the year of the nominees.
(HAIRSPRAY, WICKED, JERSEY BOYS, SPAMALOT, THE PRODUCERS, GYPSY, IN THE HEIGHTS, THE LION KING, RENT, etc etc etc)
They'll never award a deserving recording over the big hit of the year (case in point, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA versus SPAMALOT. I mean, really?).
Will Billy Elliot's album be eligible for the Grammy Awards next year? If so, I think the trend I posted about in my last post will be broken...
Am I the only one who thought the GYPSY recording didn't work as well on its own as it did in context and in the theater? I actually prefer the Bernadette recording...
And that's a good question WAT...I'm assuming it won't be eligible? I mean it was recorded a few years ago and it's not even the Broadway cast...I don't know....
"They'll never award a deserving recording over the big hit of the year"
I'm beginning to think that this is the case...these award shows are all about politics
Were the opera categories given out yet? Patti is nominated.
Very well deserved.
It will give a little boost to its already OK box office.
'Gypsy' and 'Young Frankenstein' didn't even deserve a nod.
Congrats to the company.
Congratulations to In the Heights! Also, it should be recognized that this is Sh-K-Boom's first win, so congrats to them!
Woohoo!
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuVERY cool !!! They did a great job with it, as far as capturing the show ! CONGRATS !!!
Yes!! The show and Lin totally deserve this!
