You can either:
1) wait in line in Central Park on the day of the performance you want to attend for their ticket distribution (free); or
2) Make a donation and receive a ticket in exchange ($175 per ticket)

Great news! Thank you for the information!
My summer trip dates are going to overlap with this performance, so I was going to add it to my list, but i really like having my tickets before my trip, since I am only in town a few days.

Posted: 6/4/12 at 1:05pmWill they be doing the "virtual" lottery again this year where you enter online for tickets and get an email at about 3:00 if you've won for that night?

Yes, they will be.
If you're only in town for a few days and are willing to part with the money, I'd say make the donation. It's pricey but will save you a lot of time. The ticket line for this show will undoubtedly be insane.

Posted: 6/4/12 at 1:40pmDepends on the show. When I went to Merchant of Venice, we got in line around 11pm the night before and were by no means the first people in line. For that show not everyone in line got tickets.

The box office distributes tickets at 1. As willep says, when you should get in line depends on the show. Last year, people could get there at 1 o'clock and get a ticket.
This year... that will not be the case. Into the Woods will be a madhouse.
As You Like It will be easier, I'd think.

Posted: 6/4/12 at 4:22pmInto the Woods will be INSANE with all the starpower so Im getting there at 5 AM to assure tickets :) You can do virtual lottery or donate lots of money, but I find the experience of waiting with fellow thespians exciting! :)

Posted: 6/4/12 at 4:25pmFrom the buzz here, one wouldn't know a show was opening tomorrow at the Delacorte. Let's hope it stays that way as I'd rather not have to camp out for 12 hours if it's not necessary.

I doubt Into the Woods is going to be a madhouse. The star wattage is not that strong.
I remember The Seagull which had a much larger star wattage and there were several nights that had empty seats. The hype was big but the truth was you could get in to see it.

"The star wattage wasn't much for HAIR and that was a madhouse."
Lesson learned: Kevin Kline should have taken off his clothes at the end of Act 1 of The Seagull.

"But keep in mind that your ticket isn't exchangeable if the show is rained out"
That is totally not true. Enclosed in my tickets was the following..In the event of rain if a performance is cancelled due to rain Summer Supporters may request tickets to a subsequent performance(subject to availability) by calling Member/Supporter Services.

Posted: 6/4/12 at 7:09pm^ That wasn't enclosed with my ticket. Aren't you the person who claimed you paid $200 for your seats, not $175?

Posted: 6/4/12 at 7:52pmI did pay $400.00 for two tickets. Perhaps single seats are $175.00? Not sure about that one. Enclosed with my tickets was a yellow sheet of paper with directions to the Delacorte and their rain policy.

Here's what the website says:
IN THE EVENT OF RAIN
In the event of rain, we may delay the beginning of the performance, but will perform if and when it seems possible. If a performance is cancelled due to rain, Summer Supporters may request tickets to a subsequent performance (subject to availability) by calling Member/Supporter Services at 212-539-8650. No performance will be cancelled before 8pm.
So, it is essentially what mar97 said. You can request replacement tickets, but there is no guarantee.
