Michael Bennett, I agree with what you said. I think the overall approach of it is a great change, and I love how it sounds in general. I was just being nitpicky about a couple of lines, but as you and others have mentioned, it may translate well on film since its a much smaller space than a live theatre.
Although I find it a bit emotionally flat, I still think that Without You is lovely. That songs destroys me.
When Rosario sing "I live this moment as my last" in Another Day it sounds more like "is" than "as"
After five or six listens and the initial "OH MY GOD!!" sentiments, my overall feeling is that it's excellent. I think everything sounds wonderful. I think my only complaint, if we can call it that, is that it sounds less complete than the OBC; but that may just be a matter of what I'm used to. I miss things like Happy New Year and Christmas Bells a bit, but that's just the way it is.
Sorry, I hate pointless posts and I don't have anything new to contribute, but I just listened to 'Love Heals' again and I just have to say...GAAAHHH. I seriously CANNOT get enough of this song. ::hits repeat::
I've decided not to buy the album until I see the movie. I want the experience at the theater to be even more exciting. If I've heard the music beforehand, it will detract from my experience
Can't wait until the movie comes out!
I decided today, during class, when I wasn't paying attention, that I really like this version of 'Your Eyes'
I mean, I still think OSG should of been Roger's one song, because well, it actually has all the elements of an actual song.
But, I actually do like the song now. Yeah.
Why does Rosarios "spinning" on LMC sound so weird and electronicized? That shouldn't be that hard of a note to hit.

Jon worte it as "Rhythm power feeling " and WJH always reversed the order. If you look at the libretto it is R,P,F. I forget when but at some point the actors playing angel changed it back.
so excited guys, my dad just snagged the last idina/maureen cd from J & R...can't wait till he gets home...i'll let u kno what i think later!
Love the new CD. I got it with MIMI on the cover
CD over all is good. Rosario (just adequate) Adam (different vocal choices. dead on with some songs but i miss the flavor and texture on others. not bad tho just differnet). Everyone else great(as expected). My one gripe is that the overall sound of the recording had lost its needed "grit". the vocal mixing on this CD often gives the group performances a too smooth disney sound. obviously this doensnt work for RENT as it might for other musicals moving to film. A rock musical must sound like rock when its supposed to be rocking! While giving it even more of a rock feel was smart, MIXING is also key. Perhaps watching the movie will distract from that problem. we'll see. Oh.. and in "Seasons" .. where are the men? bring them up!! (well too late for that) again poor mixing. Cheers.

Mandi Moo--
I entirely agree. I thought Your Eyes was pretty... well, BORING on the OBCR. I didn't like it.
However, the movie soundtrack version... I gave it one listen and immediately decided that it could actually fit as Roger's one song this time (although I think most of us agree OSG is better XD). It sounded much-improved... just... better, overall. In my opinion, anyway.
That "Disney" mixed sound you talk about is, ironically, part of what I don't like about the soundtrack to the film of HAIR. But it's simply a neccesity. Movie audiences, without the joy of seeing live performers, HAVE to be able to hear the lyrics, in order to stay engaged in the musical sequences in a film.

marquise i agree with you on your review. i think rosario has a very nice quality to her voice, but you can tell that they mixed her vocals carefully. when you compare her vocals to tracie, or jesse, or even adam - you can tell that she is more of an actor who sings, and not a singer. but i just loved jesse and tracie.
yes kas. she is mixed differently. in giving it another listen, she doesn;t sound quite as electronically enhanced as i initially suspected. it's the mix they used. i do like the fact that she isn't just singing the song. in some cases like in LMC she's actually acting out in addition to singing which gives it a nice dimension (e.g.: "i'm illin', i had it when i walked in the door, it was pure! is it on the floor?")
and no MrMidwest her spinning is mos definitely not "enhanced" she sang that all on her own. i've even listened to it through headphones.
speaking of mixing, what's up with the term "Disney mix", is that something new you people coined? never heard that one before. weird...
rosario is growing on me with each listen....

Idina sounds SO MUCH better on the soundtrack in "Take Me or Leave Me" than she did on the OBC. On the OBC she sounded kinda raspy or something. I like her soundtrack sound much better. And Tracie Thoms Rocks on her part too.
Probably my favorite thing is all Tracie's parts in "Seasons of Love"!
Regarding "Disney Mix" -- do you remember those Disney records you used to have as a kid? They always had those choral singers (I think they were actually called the Cammarata Group)who would sing "Over the Rainbow" or "Black Beauty" and they always had this smooth, perfectly blended sound?
That's what I think we're talking about. The Life Support section of "No Other Day" could be a radio jingle, it's so smoothly blended....
LOL...Yes! I do remember those records! LMAO!!! Now I understand. Thanks for clearing that up!
"and no MrMidwest her spinning is mos definitely not "enhanced" she sang that all on her own. i've even listened to it through headphones."
Well, whatevers going on there, I suppose how it sounds sort of punctuates how Mimi feels when she has her "spinning" episodes so it kind of works.
she actually sounds very similar to Daphne in that part.
As far as "Disney mix," I was thinking more of when you hear the Disney channel play "rock music." Some of the album sounds like it's mix with that quality. Almost like it's rock music, but the vocals and guitars are watered down to this pop-ish sound. Instead of that pure sound, it sounds over-produced.
I got the Idina/Maureen cover...the recording is overall amzing!! i Have to say I like it a little better then the OBC, although i miss Daphne Rubin-Vega though. Rosario is amazing and so is Traci!!
Favorited include:
La Vie Boheme
Seasons of Love
Tango:Maureen (love the added dialoge "where'd you learn 2 tango?" LOL)
Out Tonight
Today 4 U
Love Heals
