Now up to #8 on itunes!
Do Canadians not get a choice of cover?
MyDreamsRecurring, i think we all miss those things, but this is a different medium, and there are many cnahges for the better.
Just because it's different doesn't make it bad!
MyDreamsRecurring, I can't restore your faith in the movie, because it doesn't seem as if you're willing to accept ANY changes from the stage show. Please tell me you weren't serious about your entire opinion of this movie balancing on the appearance of the handcuff dance, because that's just pathetic.
During Rent, there is a pause when the lines for "Maureen, I'm not a theater person" usually are, so it could possibly be in the movie as dialogue that they chose not to include on the soundtrack.
I have no idea what "Anthony's flaming gay voice" is, so I can't acknowledge that it's gone in the soundtrack. He isn't "flaming gay" and it's rude to classify anyone as such.
If you're that depressed by the changes on the soundtrack, maybe you shouldn't see the movie. It's not exactly like the stage show, which it sounds like you were expecting, so you'll probably only be disappointed.
what's up with this "flamingly gay voice" and "handcuff dance" and "mimi sounding straight out of hollywood" b.s.?
oh and in case you didn't know rosario is a new yorker, born and bred on the lower east side....

I'm only up to OUT TONIGHT...and so far I'm torn. Some numbers (RENT, SEASONS OF LOVE, OUT TONIGHT) sound excellent - and others (ONE SONG GLORY, LIGHT MY CANDLE, TANGO MAUREEN) sound completely boring. It's as if the actors were catatonic on the couch laying down while recording some of these songs...what is UP with them?
I kinda felt the same way when I got my first listen.
Like I stated before I'm not really feeling Adam's vocals on this recording. He's much better on the OBC. Tempo on LMC is kinda slow....but TANGO MAUREEN is better on this than the OBC, IMO. OSG is kinda "eh" for me.
So far, Adam is definitely the most uninterested on the CD...and that's really strange. It has none of the energy that the other recording has at all. Hopefully their performances on screen even it out and make up for it - but I'm not gonna lie - I'm a little disappointed.
I've gone through more of the CD - and although I think Idina sounds bizarre and bad on OVER THE MOON, TAKE ME OR LEAVE ME is just amazing.
My .02, now that I've caught my breath a little....
I went into listening to this CD with a strange mixture of apprehension and dread. I, like most Rentheads, have worn out my OBC recording, so to say it would take a lot for me to enjoy the movie soundtrack as much would be an understatement.
So - here's what I think:
It's very different. It's very much the same. Does that make sense?
In the end - it's all good. Some of the new stuff, in fact is downright breathtaking.
The REALLY Good:
Parts of the new CD are vastly superior to the OBC recording. For example, the new version of "Rent", right off the bat, blew my doors off. The orchestration in this song is just so much better than the OBC version that I was shocked. And, surprisingly, I didn't really miss what was removed from the original (likely to be spoken words in the movie, I'd imagine.)
"Tango: Maureen" is another big improvement, and not just because of the orchestration. The interaction between Anthony and Tracie is so good that you can FEEL their mutual frustration with Maureen. What a wonderful addition. That scene, I believe, will be a highlight in the film.
{BOWING IN REVERENCE} Jesse L. Martin, I am not worthy, sir. After I sat awestruck, blubbering through four live performances of the "I'll Cover You: Reprise" back in the day, you have managed to make that song even MORE touching. Bravo. I have no words....
What You Own. I loved the OBC version, but this one is even better. It just has a much better overall feel to it, and, if the Sony people have any sense, this will be released as a single (along with Out Tonight and Rent, IMHO)
Speaking of "Out Tonight" - My fears that Rosario Dawson wouldn't be up for the challenges of Mimi vocally have been happily quelled. While Dawson doesn't have the raw feel of Daphne Rubin-Vega, she has a wonderful, powerful voice, and lets loose on Out Tonight. Again - another movie highlight to look forward to.
The Still Good, But Not As Good:
One Song Glory. Can't put my finger on it, but it's probably because this is my favorite song on the OBC recording, so the movie version left me...I dunno, less impressed. I guess it's hard to duplicate the power that song had in the OBC. It's still good, don't get me wrong, but - not my favorite on this soundtrack.
And, to be a bit flippant: Did Adam Pascal breath helium before every take? His voice is SO different than it was 10 years ago. Not saying bad, but just - wow. Very different.
Without You. Maybe it's the lower vocal range that the song is now in, but it didn't have the same emotional kick for me as the OBC version. On the other hand, my wife LOVES this new version, so who am I to argue?
Overall, I didn't miss stuff that was taken out that was on the OBC recording - the phone calls, etc. But - I REALLY wish Christmas Bells had made it to the soundtrack, though I understand the reason for cutting it. There's no way that song would play on a movie screen.
I'm sure my opinions will change and evolve after I listen several hundred more times over the next couple of weeks, but in the long run, I don't see how they could have done much better.
One thing is certainly for sure - I CAN'T WAIT for November 23!!!!!!!!
If "Love Heals" was originally written for the show but then cut, it isn't eligible for the Oscar. A song has to be written expressly for the movie for it to be nominated. That's why "Come What May" from "Moulin Rouge!" was ineligible. It was written for "Romeo and Juliet" but scrapped.
I went to three stores today and nada. I'm going to Barnes and Noble tomorrow. Where have y'all had success in finding it? I want a Maureen cover.
Did anyone else hate Over The Moon??
I felt there was just no energy in it..and she took so many lower notes that it made it even less exciting...
I like Rosario Dawnson's voice and I believe she's a strong singer but what I like about Mimi in the OBC is that she has that sort of rawness, not sophisticated voice, it works so well in "Out Tonight," I do miss it. And dreamsrecurring, I too miss "Maureen, I'm not a theater person (...) Could never be a theater person." I also miss in "Tango:Maureen" how there's a sharp change after "You should try it in heels," it's not like that in the soundtrack. "Life Support" is also disappointing.
I'm only in Disc 1 but I really like the sound of the soundtrack, but you know, there'll always be things we're all going to miss from the OBC, it's about adapting to a different medium. Can't wait to listen "Take me or Leave me"
I was just listeing to LMC again. At first I had an 'Eh' reaction, but now I really like it.
I wonder if Adam will do the handcuff thing in the movie, I hope so. :)
I soooo don't like "La Vie Boheme." I just listened to it and it was very disappointing, I think "Over the Moon" lacks that I-don't-know-what from the OBCR, just my personal opinion.
The Tower Records at Lincoln center still had loads of Maureen covers. I got my hands on a copy today.
Still on disc one. A mi me gusta mas.

Don't throw stones, but I HATE Love Heals with passion. It's bad. It's so bad.
Glory, on the other hand, I find myself liking. My one complaint is the tone of Adam's long notes. It's... whinier than it was. It's funny, because there's none of it on the HAIR recording, so I assume it was a character choice. It does NOT do his voice well, though.
I like Rosario, but she seems to blur the words. She has good diction, but nothing is really brought out. She's VERY different from Daphne, which I like. They're apples and oranges and I enjoy them both, but I do prefer Daphne's acting on Goodbye Love.
Idina bored me to tears with Over The Moon. It's not crazy or funny or anything, just... BLAH.
Jesse is incredible. Wilson and Anthony sound the same, and that is not bad in any way. I don't love Tracie's high note in SOL, but she's really good otherwise.
Overall, pretty/very good, though it didn't overwhelm me.

How can one possibly hate Love Heals?!

Insomniak, you found the perfect description for "Over the Moon": blah. It is sooo not the fun, passionate, sort of Bohemian rant that it was in the OBCR. Idina Menzel certainly disappointed me with this one.
The timing change doesn't really bother me (move to Christmas Day v. Eve). But shouldn't it be a little more consistent? When Mark sings 'Halloween' the lyrics are still 'How did I get here / Hell the hell / Christmas EVE last year... Is that not weird? Maybe I'm missing something.
I really like Over the Moon.
