Irving Berlin's HOLIDAY INN Heading to Broadway Next?

The clips from The Muny and Goodspeed look fantastic!! I hope this comes in at some point!

This seems like a trend we are getting on Broadway; turning a movie with music by a famous composer into a musical. Top Hat and An American in Paris, and now Holiday Inn

A trend that is not exactly new, yes. But still, this seems exciting. Have always loved the music of Irving Berlin. I wonder if it would just be for a limited engagement over the holiday season or an open run.

well the show takes place over many holidays so I'm assuming it would be an open ended run. If it ever comes at all. and i think its a new trend.

Don't get ahead of yourself Philly

The landscape is littered with shows from movie musicals by famous composers that flopped

I'll be 100% honest right now. I bought the movie from Target two years ago (it was $5), put it in, and immediately turned it off and never watched it again as soon as I saw them applying blackface.

Please tell me that the musical does not have any racist undertones in it, because I am not a scrooge and I adore Christmas (and most other holidays) and I really want to love this.

On the Town was adapted into a feature film, NOT based on one!

Maybe I am wrong Jeffrey but OTT was a movie with music from a famous composer even it was adapted from one. It is called splitting hairs.

It's not splitting hairs; they're two completely different things.

On the Town was written for the stage, then later adapted as a film, with most of the original score abandoned. The latest production was a revival of the stage show, not an adaptation of the movie.

I agree with Jeffrey. It is not the same thing. OTT is a movie based on a Broadway musical, not a Broadway musical based on a movie. There are a lot more of the former than the latter.

AAIP may be the first hit in the Movie to Broadway route, which also includes State Fair (flop), High Society (flop), and Victor Victoria, which only ran as long as it did because of Julie Andrews, but which I think was a flop.

the only one i can really think of is Singin in the Rain, but that didn't have a famous composer. 42nd Street was a movie first and had some music right? but then it got more songs and was changed a lot for broadway.

Im not to familiar with these types of movies. Meet me in St Louis was a movie first?

"Phillypinto, you also realize that most of the Singin' in the Rain songs were by Nacio Herb Brown, who I would call very famous indeed."

With lyrics by Arthur Freed, who pretty much shaped the movie musical as we know it during that MGM golden age.

PromisesPromises-There weren't any racist undertones that I detected when I caught Holiday Inn at Goodspeed last December. Wonderful show, superb choreography. Loved Patti Murin. I would absolutely see this again.

Meet Me in St. Louis is one of the best musicals of the 1940's. You've never heard of The Trolley Song? Clang clang clang and all that?

"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
