Jesus.
Are you kidding me? I said, "IMO". Of course it CAN be argued and it often is on this very board by people who didn't appreciate the previously mentioned performances as much as myself and others have. IN MY OPINION, however, the argument is pointless because I think those three performances are peerless.
Sorry to have bothered you and thanks so much for nitpicking. I meant no harm and you should know that.
While I enjoyed Gypsy, and REALLY liked SITPWG a lot, I felt that South Pacific was head and shoulders above them.
To me it was theatrical perfection.
I'm not as sure about individual awards...but I'm rooting for it to win for best revival.
I have this strange feeling Kelli could pull out a win for best actress.
I'm hoping South Pacific takes home the Best Revival Tony just as another phenomenal revival of an R&H opus at the Vivian Beaumont did 14 years ago -- Carousel.
And, yes, South Pacific is THAT good.

I hope it is that good. I bought tickets for 2 shows in case it IS that good (good seats, too.) . But if not, I'm sure it will be "good enough". I'm not worried.
I laughed. I cried (a lot). I tapped my toes.
While not everyone will agree that it's FABULOUS, I would find it difficult to imagine anyone DISLIKING it or even thinking it was just "ok".
It's that good.
I would LOVE Kelli to pull out a win for Best Actress. Paolo, too.

Wow! I did not know this thread existed! I just asked this question in my other thread about the Hirschfield and saw this one when I came out of my post!

I don't know if it's really that good...I have tickets for July...will get back to you then! :)
It's good. I don't think it's as good as most folks are making it out to be. I found the SUNDAY revival to be far superior. But SOUTH PACIFIC is the show with commercial appeal, and they've already practically promised a tour, so it's obvious that the Tony will go to that show. If I were voting, I'd choose SUNDAY.
Seeing it today & I have a feeling I will enjoy more than Sunday
It will probably win Best Revival. This year the revival category is very strong.
Yes, it is a strong year for revivals.
South Pacific is excellent, and will probably win a well deserved Tony. I agree with WBaF that my personal vote would go to SITPWG.
Similarly, although it looks as if Patti will take home a well deserved Tony in a month, my vote will go to Jenna Russell.
Just returned from it & it was awesome
Everything worked. The actors, dancers, set designers, musicians & everyone else worked their magic. The production, as is, would have to be modified to tour. It is simply too large. The overture reminds one of how Broadway used to be.
The place was packed today & good luck after the nominations come out. Forget it after the awards are given out.
I was at the matinee too. I had seen this production during previews and enjoyed it but it has actually gotten even better since March. The music is so moving, and the large orchestra sound is overwhelming. I thought each of the principals has developed a clearer sense of who they are and how they progress during the show. But I was most impressed by Paulo Szot who was wonderful in March but a little stiff and very restrained. Now he wins me over in every scene - and his acting is sincere, unforced and touching. I had always considered the de Becque character to be one-dimensional, defined by his vocal performance and his heroic part in the plot. But Paulo Szot has made him into a proud/happy/angry/funny/loving man. Extraordinary development for his first Broadway effort, and an exercise that will stand him in good stead as an opera singer, too. Any award nomination he gets is well deserved. Bravo!
Personally, I *cannot* wait to see this in August!
I'll let you know on when I get back from seeing it on the 22nd...I can't wait!

From what I see (and what I had felt all along), it seems Kelli might just get the recognition she deserves via an award, and this performance might put her on some people's map who did not know of her before.
Kudos and good luck, Kelli! Really hope she gets an award for this, although she is up against strong competition this year.

It is worth seeing over and over again. It's an execellent production. The layout of the theatre with the stage moving to present the orchestra during the overture adds to the magnificence and excitement of MY FAVORITE MUSICAL!
It's a must see for anyone who wants to experience the overwhelming emotions of one of the most romantic classics ever. With it's beautiful music and romantic storyline, it's a treasure!
I can't wait to see it again.

Elphie, I like your line up.
I'm glad you included Boyd--I think he is one of the most underestimated actors on Broadway, and he deserves more recognition.
I hope when I get to NYC, I can see this show (SP). Would it be OK to take my chances and buy the ticket when I am there...? I'd like some feedback on this. Will the ticket be the same price as getting it ahead of time? Info, pleeeeze...

I'm hearing that people are getting 'day of' tickets through the canellation line. (not sure how true this is) If it's a show you are dying to see, I personally would not wait to get tickets...especially if you are planning to see it after the Tony's. And yes, the ticket price (I believe) does not change if you buy it the day of, versus weeks, months before.
I enjoyed South Pacific....but I loved Gypsy. There's something about south pacific that doesn't move as quickly as Gypsy, and this production moves a little slowly. It's hard to describe. It's VERY good...but I don't think it's the most unbelievable thing I have ever seen (ie. Gypsy).
