I know she wouldn't be considered a conventional choice for the role (and she's not nearly a big enough name to be considered to lead a commercial revival), but I've been envisioning Jan Maxwell as Desiree. I think she's about a decade older than Glynis Johns when she played the role, but I don't think Maxwell reads her age, and more importantly I think she has the innate air of sophistication and class that the role requires.

Yes, she retired from theatre about a year ago. I'm hoping that an enticing enough opportunity will come her way to make her reconsider, though!

Jan Maxwell's Send in the Clowns would be out of this world. She also would have made a dynamite Charlotte.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Yes, Staunton and Maxwell would have both been phenomenal Charlottes at one time of another.

Ooooo, Michelle Pfeiffer would be good. She doesn't scream Desiree to me the way that Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, but she would be sexy as hell.

I need Laura Benanti as Charlotte. She'd be hilarious and she'd sing the role beautifully. I still really want to see Michael Cerveris play Fredrik. Ooo imagine Jasmine Cephas-Jones as Petra.

I was imagining Adrienne Warren as Petra!

the image of Michelle Pfeiffer as Desiree in my mind is thrilling. The original film isn't good and to be honest I don't really know if one could even work, but she would be absolutely perfect for that character.

I've been listening to Night Music a lot lately actually, and I've thought of Phillipa Soo as Anne.

I could see Benanti as Charlotte. Part of me thinks she is above that now, but if it were say a televised NyPhil concert with Kate Winslet or film it would be another story.

Desiree - Kate Winslet

Frederick - Robert Downey Jr - who can sing - or (if he can sing/for novelty sake because I love nostalgic repairings) Leonardo DiCaprio

Charlotte - Laura Benanti

Madame Armfeldt - Angela Lansbury reprises her role - a performance that deserves to be archived

Now THAT'S an event.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Incidentally, Chichester produced A Little Night Music in the mid-80s, starring Dorothy Tutin and Lila Kedrova. It was deliriously beautiful (though not quite up to the National Theatre production)

Did the last revival recoup?? I doubt another revival this soon would do well regardless of who's in it.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

the last revival recouped its entire investment.

If I recall correctly. Benanti was heavily considered for Charlotte in that revival. As was Chris Sieber as Fredrik, and Nicole Kidman as Desiree with Victoria Clark and Marin Mazzie as Broadway name back ups if a star fell through.

I would love to see Cleo Laine as Mme. Armfeldt. Especially with Imelda Staunton as Desiree. Cleo is still in good voice and I loved her "Liaisons" on her Sondheim CD, admittedly recorded years ago, but still . . . Cleo is often in a wheelchair now, but that would not hamper her in this part.

Excellent cast! Though I would prefer Nikki M. James as Charlotte. Audra's singing would be wasted as Desiree but she would be so so SO good otherwise.
