According to Riedel in the most recent TheaterTalk it is coming in the Spring.
Is this happening?

Posted: 10/20/08 at 8:16pmWell, either way Billy Elliot is pretty much winning. I guess it could stand to get some national exposure from a Tony performance though.

I wouldn't be so sure about BE winning...like I've said before, it's a phenomenal, amazing show but it could be another case of the big show with all of the buzz versus the little show with all of the entertainment value...(BE vs 9 TO 5). And now that FELA is thrown in the mix, it could be a very interesting race...
At this point, yes BE is the front runner but wasn't MOVIN OUT the longtime frontrunner and then came HAIRSPRAY which was great AND entertaining...we'll see...

You did NOT just call 9 TO 5 a "little show."
9 TO 5 is just as big, if not bigger than Billy Elliott.
It is many things, but it is not little.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 9:08pmYeah, well for one, 9 to 5 is not the "little musical" this year. It's a big corporate production. It does have Dolly though, and she's a sweetheart. I would imagine it will be nominated, but from I hear (I'm seeing Billy Elliot next week), is that Billy is both a blockbuster and a critical darling (IE Hairspray, The Producers, etc), so I think it's in the bag.

blaxx, that was rude...
Brother, your post was rude. You seem to hate the best reviewed shows!
#9re: Is FELA! definitely transferring...?
Posted: 10/20/08 at 9:13pmWell I mean little in terms of it's buzz so far...at least compared to BILLY.

MOVIN' OUT was, if anything, the underdog.
The reviews it got out of town were "close out of town" worthy. Twyla REALLY turned it around by the time it got to Broadway.
Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said of TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'.

I realized that a A Tale of Two Cities was a bad show..because that is a fact, not an opinion.
I hope Fela does transfer. I didn't the chance to see it while it was off-Broadway. I downloaded the demo songs off the site and it is definitely different - good different.

Posted: 10/20/08 at 11:05pmI loved Tales, but Fela didn't appeal to me. I like my musicals to have a cohesive story - or at least a loose story a la Company.

Posted: 10/21/08 at 12:24amI'm telling you, WAT. You have a tendency to LOVE shows that get critically trashed, and vomit the critical hits. No offense, but, really...
#16re: Is FELA! definitely transferring...?
Posted: 10/21/08 at 8:24amI meant by time the shows opened on Broadway. But forget it, I just realized HAIRSPRAY opened on Broadway before MOVIN' OUT. Sorry about that.

Posted: 10/21/08 at 8:55amI didn't see FELA during its Off-Broadway run, much to my regret and should it transfer I'd put it on the top of my must-see list. However, would it meet the same fate as Passing Strange did last year? PS had Riedel's support to the max but not enough people went to keep it open. Personally, I preferred it to ITH. Maybe a transfer to another OB house would be the better move? Just asking.

I certainly hope it transfers to Broadway. I didn't have a chance to see it Off-Broadway. But I would be there for the first-preview.
It's very appealing to me for several reasons. It's a show that thinks out of the box. Not based on a movie, but someones life story. And also the dancing and music. Would bring a different sight and sound. Which I find very exciting as a fan of Broadway.

Fela! is absolutely amazing, and Sahr Ngaujah would give anyone a run for their money as far as the Tony for Lead, but I just dont know if this show would find an audience on Broadway, especially if it played the O'Neill.
They really need a smaller house.
That being said, would LOVE the chance to see it NUMEROUS more times !

Posted: 10/21/08 at 12:37pmIs it too big for the Circle in the Square?
#23re: Is FELA! definitely transferring...?
Posted: 10/21/08 at 12:43pmI dont know if its too big for "Circle in the Square", but logistically, I cant see it working there. It dont think it would work performed "in the round". JMO

This is sounds destined to close immediately! It just does not sound appealing. I can't imagine this show finding an audience.
Did anyone see this when it was Off-Broadway? If so, can you give your thoughts on it?
