Posted: 4/8/08 at 10:55amI see ray's point, but Patti doesn't have he Tony yet,so right now everything is just speculation. Yes she the chances are great the she will get he Tony, but speaking for Kelli and Jenna the chances are great for them too. Faith,I can't speak about yet since her show hasn't opened, but make no mistake about it, the tony will most likely go a lady in a revival since all the each got stellar reviews and each brings something to the table that is worthy of a tony. It be great if Patti won, but I am still gunning for O'Hara.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 3:55pmI think Kerry Butler is a stretch for a Tony nom. The Little Mermaid is lame, true, but Sierra Bogess is fantastic in it, her voice is absolutly crystal clear. Kerry is fun in the Xanadu but not tony material. Patti will most likely take it home..

Kerry Butler is a Broadway veteran who has been snubbed for Tony Nominations twice in the past. She is now starring in one of the most positively received new musicals this season.
Boggess is making her Broadway debut in the season's most panned new musical.
Butler's FAR ahead of the line from Boggess.

Biases aside, Wanna Be A Foster is right about Kerry in my opinion in regards to a NOMINATION. Not that Boggess isn't very talented, but the role of Ariel isn't, in my opinion, a Tony-award winning role. Kerry's been snubbed at least once (and it's widely known in the industry that she was) has "paid her dues" (not that it's a requirement for a Tony) but has is also a quadruple threat in Xanadu, created a whole new role and got the best reviews of her career across the board.
May 13th will now doubt be an interesting day and the message boards filled with who should or should not have been named as a nominee in all categories..

"Boggess is making her Broadway debut in the season's most panned new musical."
I don't know Foster. Except for Clive Barnes' notice (which was probably because the production photos and press packet were of high quality) Young Frankenstein was universally trashed too.
"Ever since Evita her roles have kept going down!"
Are you kidding LuPoneBasher#9? (I'm not even going to bother looking up your actual user name) Seriously? Are you kidding? Reno Sweeney? Mrs. Lovett? Maria Callas? And now Madame Rose? They're all much better roles than Eva Peron. Do you mean the quality of her performance, because she's gotten better with each new performance.
"I think Faith Prince will take it!"
While I wholeheartedly adored A Catered Affair and found Faith Prince's performance moving and rather wonderful, I still think LuPone should get it. I mean, did you even see A Catered Affair? Are you just picking some talked about lady to spite LuPone?
"Even though this role is incredible, she doesn't live up to Angela, Tyne, Ethel, and Bernadette!"
It's MISS MERMAN to YOU!
Wow, this reminds me of the night in 2006 when LuPone lost her Tony and I went psychocrazy all over the place. Other nominees- watch out!

I just don't see how Sierra Boggess could land a nomination over Kerry Butler, then again I never expected Laura Bland Bundy to get nominated over Chenoweth last season. And while I disagree that Butler should have been nominated in her past Broadway turns, this is her year. I have yet to see XANADU (which of course diminishes my opinion) but judging from the cast recording, soundboard, and multiple clips/videos, Butler is turning in an adorable performance full of charisma, and she is also making camp work which is never easy.
From all accounts, Boggess is directed to make an impression of Jodi Benson, and she does it successfully. I don't see how that is worthy of a nomination.

And a bad Jodi Benson impression at that. While I hated Xanadu itself, Butler was amusing. Boggess is charmless and awful. I don't mean to sound like John Simon here, but- she screams the role, she's bland onstage and looks like she should be in the chorus of La Cage Aux Folles, if you know what I mean.
But stranger things have happened. Maybe Butler will have to say, "How do you buck a mermaid (or Bob Iger)?"

Well, correct me if I'm wrong but she has been the favorite to win the award twice now, in the past few years.
I don't see how they can just keep denying her the award without a personal agenda behind it (spare me the talk of the quality of the other nominees, please. We all know this award is for her.)
You can snub the front runner once, but it's very iffy if it happens twice.

"Wouldn't it feel terribly personal if LuPone doesn't win? No matter to who."
Yes, I think so too, blaxx. Because it's not as simple as this being "just" a great performance among other great performances.
Ms. LuPone is giving THE Tony Award-winning performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical of the season.
Also, loved this comment:
"spare me the talk of the quality of the other nominees, please. We all know this award is for her."
I agree. The other actresses who we anticipate receiving nominations are giving incredible performances, but Ms. LuPone's work, performance, and reviews in "Gypsy" are of an entirely different level.
*Sidebar-
I don't care what anyone wants to say about it, she was COMPLETELY snubbed in 2006. The woman re-invented an iconic role that, until then, had always involved successive actresses mimicking/channeling the original actress' performance (which Ms. LuPone was once guilty of herself for the Philharmonic concert staging) AND received RAVE reviews for it. Something was very wrong that year and I think "jv92" has expressed a very plausible/likely explanation for the bs that went down.

You can justify not giving the revival award to the production, but you're giving the show a huge middle finger by not giving the award to her if it's called PATTILuPONEGYPSY!
This is the only award the production needs, really. The whole thing was pretty much put on for her to play the part. It's pure unadulterated Broadway honey.
As good, amazing, humble, subtle, layered, fantastic the other performers are, Patti LuPone is the event itself (sure the rest of the cast is great, but you get my point). You can't beat that.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 8:41pmIf Patti LuPone doesn't win I will cry. This is the role she was BORN to play. I know its cliche but its true. Laura Benanti will def be nominated and so will Boyd Gaines.
#90re: Is Lupone Tony Bound?
Posted: 4/8/08 at 8:45pmAnd they will win. Don't worry. They don't want to make Arthur Laurents angry. That's worse than pissing off Oprah.

Just some random thoughts after reviewing this thread...
I still struggle with my opinion sometimes, but I actually thought Idina Menzel gave the best performance in 2004. Her voice was in great condition the night I went and her Elphaba was able to anchor the show while "stopping" it at the same time.
It’s a real shame Sierra Boggess is making her Broadway debut in such a poorly reviewed show and in a very competitive year. After seeing her in concert last night, I have no doubt that if she chooses to remain on Broadway she will become a star.
I saw Fantasia in the Color Purple and while she was incredible the role and the show just suck. I came home that night two days after seeing Phantom of the Opera and announced that I finally saw a musical that is worse than POTO.
Go Patti, Luara and Boyd!!!

It would have been absurd for any performer in the SWEENEY TODD revival to win a Tony Award for a performance in which they were standing still the whole time.
OK, maybe walking a few steps here and there.
Patti's "reinvention" was "Patti LuPone as Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett." Nothing new or complex there.
I saw SWEENEY six times, and while the production as a whole was GLORIOUS, Patti's performance was the least revelatory thing happening on that stage.
LaChanze ACTED, SANG, and DANCED the role of a completely defined human being from age 14 to 60 in what in my opinion was a gorgeous, heartbreaking new musical that deserved much praise.
Patti's performance in GYPSY this past summer was the same game as when she did SWEENEY. Patti as Patti as Rose.
Luckily, Laurents worked hard with her between then and now, and here we are on Broadway and she is delivering a fully developed human portrayal that has the audience feeling for the character as opposed to the actress.
Patti deserves this Tony for GYPSY. She did not deserve it for SWEENEY TODD.

Patti LuPone as Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett
I keep finding this meme more and more meaningless.
As I said in a previous thread...
Are we really to believe that Merman, consummate Method actress that she was, shed her Merman-like skin and "inhabited" the role of Rose Hovick?
Or that Bernadette---with her cutesy-poo interpretation--was "being" Rose and not "being" Bernadette?
Patti was "being" Rose at City Center as much--and as little--as Bernadette was "being" Rose--or Annie Oakley, for that matter.
They're STARS. If you like them, you say they're "being" the character; if not, you say they're "being" themselves.
It means nothing.

I love Patti LuPone, PalJoey. So don't say I don't like her therefore I don't like her performance.
I saw her in SUNSET BOULEVARD in 1994 and it was one of the most gorgeous performances I have ever seen on a stage.
I think she is magnificent in the Broadway production of GYPSY.
She was just fine in her concert-like portrayal of Mrs. Lovett, but it was NOT deserving of a Tony Award.

And PJ, rather than attacking ME, why don't actually you engage in the conversation?
I know that's more complicated than just making it personal, though, but it is an easy out that you take a lot on here.
