"Actors love working with her"
Have you spoken to anyone in NOISES OFF?
I'm just saying...
Patti can be a lovely person and a professional in some situations but there are plenty of opposing opinions.
I still consider her the front runner this year with O'Hara breathing down her neck, and Prince hot on their heels.

I love Patti LuPone, loved her in Gypsy and in Sweeney Todd....but to say that LaChanze only won the Tony because she is black completely discredits her performance. Say what you will about The Color Purple as a show but LaChanze gave a fabulous performance in a far more demanding role than that of Mrs. Lovett.
This is Patti's year.

Sorry courtnyj, but it's true. The show sucked. The role sucked. LaChanze sucked. I didn't love everything about La LuPone's take on Mrs. Lovett, although I did think she was quite exceptional and should have won. Knowing how Oprah is, she would have went on some big tirade about how anti-black the Tony Awards are.
And are you kidding me? That role in The Color Purple is more demanding than MRS. LOVETT?!?! What are you smoking? An actress playing Mrs. Lovett has more work to do in her FIRST NUMBER than an actress playing Miss Celie (or Cellie, or however the hell you spell it) does in the ENITRE SHOW. Sorry. Mrs. Lovett is the second lead in an opera. Celie has a crappy number to scream at the end.
And Young Frankenstein will get NOTHING except design nods and possibly a featured actress nod for Andrea Martin, BobbyBubby.

Lupone worked her ass off to give an understated, ensemble driven performance in Sweeney Todd.Compare it to her slightly over-the-top Lovett in concert. The difference is palpable and quite amazing. I think her Rose is in the same category. Watch her sing "Everything's Coming Up Roses" with a fierceness to rival Merman.
LaChanze was fine in Color Purple but missed a large percent of her performances before and after the Tony. I find it hard to believe she was in the show for every Tony voter. Lupone however, rarely missed an unscheduled performance.

The ONLY person in the Noises Off cast who hated Patti was a certain formerly uni-browed actor who wasn't even nominated for Guys and Dolls.
Guess the Sky WASN'T the limit, loser.

PJ, Really? I thought they got along? Didn't they do an Annie Get Your Gun concert at Lincoln Center a few years ago?
And may I say- Mr. Gallagher is quite talented. He saved the lifeless OC for four years and is supposedly the only person not dying a painful death onstage at The Country Girl right now in New York.

"Just curious on thoughts at the possibility of her taking the Tony. This isn't a question of whether you liked her performance or not, but a thread about her Tony chances."
Really?????? Is there any doubt in anyone's mind that she might not get a nomination?
Of course she is going to get a nomination. Doesn't she usually get a nomination?
Pretty much.
I would guess it is pretty much a guarantee that she will be nominated.
Its just like Meryl Streep. Whatever she's in, she gets a nomination.

Posted: 4/6/08 at 9:18pmJenna Russell will absolutely win the Tony Award this year. Good for you Patti for being able to do what you've always wanted, and you are 110% AMAZING at it. However, Jenna Russell as Dot, ripped my heart out of my chest and ran with it. She unmistakably gives one of the best female performances of the past decade. I never, ever, cared for Bernadette's Dot, or for that matter, Dot as a character. Yet Russell found a way to bring an immense amount of life and depth to the character, and she does it so eloquently and so beautifully, that if she's not rewarded for it, there is without a doubt a problem in the world of musical theatre.

"in a far more demanding role than that of Mrs. Lovett."
I really hope that was meant as a joke.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
#38re: Is Lupone Tony Bound?
Posted: 4/6/08 at 9:24pmI mean no harm to either, all I am saying is they are both sure to get a nomination in anything they do! Don't read into it!!!

OK, just making sure. Thanks.
(It's true though. Even when she's not in a movie, they nominate her)

"I really hope that was meant as a joke."
No, I did not mean that as a joke. The role of Celie requires the actor to age from 14 to mid-50s, while singing several demanding songs and spending most of the show on stage. She carries the show.
Mrs. Lovett is a complex character and LuPone brought a lot to the role, but it's hard to compete with a showy role like Celie especially when that production of Sweeney Todd was so ensemble-driven.
Obviously many of you disagree so that is all I will say on the subject.

The 2008 Tony Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 and the Awards show is on Sunday, June 15th. from RC in Austin, Texas...
P.S. The lady in my avatar is Joanna Cameron, who played a high school teacher, turned Isis/crime fighter in the 1975-1976 series "The Secrets of Isis." I LOVED watching that as a young person!!

Patti wasn't nominated for The Old Neighborhood (which she got some pretty stellar reviews for) or Noises Off, so she *doesn't* always get nominated.
Though the chances of her not getting a nod for Gypsy is pretty unlikely.
#43re: Is Lupone Tony Bound?
Posted: 4/6/08 at 10:32pmShe will definitely get a nomination, but she doesn't have a lock on winning.

Having seen all five of the probably nominees, plus the wild card (Sierra Boggess), none of the women are in the same league as LuPone. She should win this award handily.
Like someone else said, Gypsy will take three acting awards, and South Pacific will get Best Revival, plus the design awards.

She (at this point) is definitely going to win the Tony. Especially because she was thought to be the frontrunner for SWEENEY TODD and many think she deserved to win for that.
The nominees will almost certainly be (in order of best chances to worst):
LuPone, GYPSY
Prince, A CATERED AFFAIR
O'Hara, SOUTH PACIFIC
Russell, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
Butler, XANADU

I would have to change that order to:
LuPone, GYPSY
O'Hara, SOUTH PACIFIC
Russell, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
Prince, A CATERED AFFAIR
Butler, XANADU

Watch out for O'Hara.
In the past ten years, the Tonys have often given the Best Actress trophy to up-and-comers over the more seasoned performer, or even legend. Last year was an exception, as the real competition were all seasoned performers....
She's the favorite, but where there's a favorite, there is a dark horse.

Ze Emcee, you've forced me to take a break from Patti love/Curtain Downer hatred to defend Bernadette in Sunday...
I loved Jenna and the new production, but come on. Bernadette is one of the few Broadway performers of recent decades in Patti's league and Dot was her best performance. Have you watched that video? How can you like the show at all and not like Bernadette in it? Jenna is nothing if not, a slightly less special, less interesting version of Bernadette's definitive performance.
It's one thing to hate Bernadette in Gypsy or Annie Get Your Gun, but her Dot is pretty much textbook Broadway greatness.
