I'm happily able to lay claim to being able to catch the four 'locks' for Lead Actress this year:
Faith Prince in A CATERED AFFAIR
Patti LuPone in GYPSY
Kelli O'Hara in SOUTH PACIFIC
Jenna Russell in SUNDAY...
I don't know who the fifth spot will go to, but I feel that Patti has a REALLY GOOD chance of winning it this year. Competition is super-stiff, which makes it all the more entertaining!

In Patti's favor: She's been getting raves for "the role she was born to play", she improved her performance significantly from Encores!, she hasn't won a Tony since EVITA.
Against Patti: Two Rose's (Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly) have won in the past, it might not be felt that Patti brings enough to the Rose table, she's been somewhat overshadowed by her co-stars (especially Benanti).
My opinion: It's going to be a very very close race between Patti and Faith Prince, who has nothing but good word-of-mouth for A CATERED AFFAIR.

She has a serious shot in my opinion. I personally think she should definitely win.
It seems like her competitors at the moment are Jenna Russel and Faith Prince. Ms. LuPone's reviews far surpassed those of Ms. Russel's. Mama Rose is a role that consistently gets the Tony, whereas even Bernadette didn't win for Dot, if she couldn't win for Dot, I don't really think Jenna should. I don't see Faith Prince and "A Catered Affair" getting the kind of reviews and word of mouth that can compete with Gypsy and Patti LuPone.

Did anyone read Kelli O'Hara's reviews?
They were steller!
And they may want to reward her for this show and her past two.
And I really loved Faith Prince.
I think this is a great race, with Patti just slightly ahead but remember last years Best Musical Actor, there are no givens in this game.

While O'Hara received great reviews is she really giving the performance of her career. She should have grabbed the Tony for her complex performance in Piazza.

Bernadette's loss for playing Dot wasn't the fault of the part. No one was going to lose to Chita Rivera, who had been nominated four times in the past and not won.

Posted: 4/6/08 at 5:47pmThough Chita was in a badly reviewed show, her performance was well received and much flashier/bolder than Peters' Dot. Peters would win soon after for a better performance in Song and Dance.

Posted: 4/6/08 at 5:49pmWe'd all like to think that the Tony Awardds are legitimate, yet many of us are convinced this award show (and others) are rigged. I love Patti LuPone very, very much. However, I realize that along the way she's made a few enemies. Friends of mine who are in GYPSY say she's great to work with. I know that Boyd Gaines jumped at the chance to do this production because Patti was involved and he enjoyed his past experience with her. Still, Patti's enemies may work against her in this instance. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I think Patti's competition comes from Kelli O'Hara and Jenna Russell, leaning more toward O'Hara.
And I'm pretty sure Kerry Butler will take that 5th nomination spot.

DollyPop has a point.
I call it the E factor after an actor who everyone (including himself) thought he was getting his, but he may have made too many enemies along the way.
And the cast of GYPSY has only worked with Patti a short time, let's see if they still love her 6 months down the road.
And I agree Kerry Butler should take that fifth spot fer sure.

Posted: 4/6/08 at 6:31pmButler has been snubbed twice by the Tony awards. Many considered her a lock for Hairspray and that didn't happen. I'd love to see her get a nomination as it's the first time I've heard her sing where it didn't sound like she has a deviated septum.

Yankeefan is absolutely, 100-percent, on the money right. Seeing LuPone yesterday solidifies it. It's the best performance of the season, aside from being the greatest performance of her carreer.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, LaChanze won for The Color Purple because if LuPone had won that year, the Wing and the Leauge would have ignored a major black musical and Oprah would have denounced the Tonys as "anti-black" (though they have honnored plenty of African-American shows and artists). I don't think there's any conspiracy against her going on. The only major feud she's ever had (aside from the Laurents one, which ended) is with Lloyd Webber (The Hal Prince one, by the way, is garbage). She's an absolute professional, actors love working with her (Yes, CurtainPullDowner- six months from now the Gypsy company will STILL love her) and she's bloody brilliant. This Gypsy, mark my words, will sweep the acting categories. LuPone, Benanti and Gaines will all win Tonys.

I agree with both Yankeefan and jv92.
There is no other leading women this year who could possibly be nominated; and yes, I also believe that Gypsy will sweep the acting categories. LuPone and Benanti just because, and how many reviews stated that Gaines showed what the character of Herbie can be.
