Noticed on the broadway grosses that Passing Strange is the lowest grossing of the musicals at only 50% - is the show losing money? Is it going to close soon? What was the show's original budget and weekly operating costs?

Unless it pulls an upset at the Tonys, it is curtains. IMO

Am I crazy or Xanadu made even less money this week? Oh, wait, I'm not crazy.

PS must not very expensive to run - it is a very small production.

IMO, it's Tonys, not Tony's.

Even though I liked Tony's better, I have corrected it.

It's "Tonys." It isn't an opinion, it's a fact.

people always talk about how xanadu has such small grosses, sometimes the smallest of all shows on broadway - that's so annoying!! Xanadu plays in the smallest theatre on broadway - wouldn't it make sense that, by selling fewer tickets for a house with a smaller seating capacity, they would be making less money? and wouldnt a show will such a small cast like xanadu also have relatively low operating/running costs?

people on broadwayworld.com can be rude and scary

Except for the fact that they're still not selling many tickets.

It will be gone by the winter. Thankfully.

It's the most insanely overrated show of the last few years, in my opinion. And yes, it is losing money. Even though it is considerably cheap to keep running.

Finally, someone who agrees it is overrated.

I generally buy cast albums of whatever musical I see. Will not get this one. Enjoyed YF & Crybaby much more than this.

Hey Buddha. NO and NO, (it's been playing since Feb 8!) and why would ANY producer post his operating costs on a discussion board? WTF? There's a whole lotta BS "info" here that posters just SPECULATE on. Anywhoo, why the ocassional NEG posts on PS? You must work for Cubby (just speculatin' though..Ha!)

There are negative posts about every show. Get used to it.

Thanks for snarking back for me, NYCBoy2! I owe ya a martini!
I constantly wonder how anyone even remotely interested in Bway would desire for something to fail? Makes you wonder about their own failures?

I'm going to get kicked out of the 'Du Crew for saying this, but it is overrated.

I've only seen three of the new musicals this season, but from what I heard about the other shows: this season SUCKS. XANADU is just the best of the bunch.

If XANADU were part of the 2003-2004 season where we had new shows such as AVENUE Q, WICKED, TABOO, THE BOY FROM OZ, and CAROLINE OR CHANGE - then FORGET ABOUT IT! XANADU wouldn't be as much of a success as it is.

Don't get me wrong, I ***LOVE*** XANADU and have seen it three times and it doesn't matter which season it is in - one would enjoy it the same anyway. But in a season of duds, it's getting more attention than it normally would.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I love Passing Strange, but I can't imagine its making much money.

It is inexpensive to run, but its grosses are pretty low.
Here's to hoping that audiences discover this most excellent show!

Its a shame that Passing Strange is loosing money while that debacle at the Eugene O'Neil theater is still running.

No one here knows if Passing Strange is losing money because we don't know its weekly costs.

so you want spring awakening to close? Youre kind. I dont get people who claim to love theater but get joy out of seeing shows close or waiting on baited breath for a show to leave. These are peoples jobs we are all banking on and it's disgusting.

There are plenty who believe the debacle is at the Belasco, not the O'Neil.

I never said that I want Spring Awakening to close, I just think that Passing Strange is a much much much better show. I stand by what I said the debacle is at the O'Neil not the Belasco.

Xanadu is playing at a smaller theatre and I thought it said it was at 57%. so the grosses would be smaller for it. It's also had a longer run and has reached saturation (a longer run than PS). Of course shows that you wouldn't think would still be running (for me, Avenue Q is really surprising) somehow find new audiences. Perhaps it was the tony win, but Thoroughly Modern Millie is long gone and it won a Tony, too. Shows used to only run for a season at most. Hasn't Xanadu had about 400 performances?? It's true, I don't like Passing Strange. Reviews don't matter as much as people say they do. I'm thinking that none of this season's new musicals will be long runs... time will tell!

I love that the person who calls Passing Strange overrated has the screen name "WiCKeDrocks".... Talk about an overrated show. Not that I don't like it - I do. But it IS overrated.

So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

YES!

agreed, hermione.

PASSING STRANGE isn't overrated at all. it's not a huge "commericial" success and it didn't receive a positive rave from every single critic. and I believe more people dislike it, than like it. in the theatre community (from what I can gather)

doesn't th show have to be at least one of those above-mentioned things to be considered overrated??

if anything it's so underrated.

I believe the debacle is at both the Eugene O'Neill AND the Belasco! re: Is Passing Strange losing money??
