Is Saigon worth it?

As a teenager who attends theater with her mother, there are often times in many musicals that I feel uncomfortable, as did she. For years whenever I picked a musical she didn't like, she would go "Back when I loved theater we had GOOD musicals like Miss Saigon" so, to jump to the point, how awkward will it be for me to sit in that theater for 2 and a half hours and 2 hours in a car after?

It is not the snore fest called The Lion King or an ecstatic night-out like Hello Dolly!, but at least Saigon is a show you will have a lot to talk about with your mom.

Not awkward at all, what makes you assume it would be awkward?
It’s a good show and a good production, awkward is probably the last emotion you’d feel afterward, bring tissues!

It seems like you've already made up your mind that you won't like it. Otherwise, why would it be awkward?

I think the first 15 minutes might be a little uncomfortable to watch with a child because the actual Miss Saigon “pageant” is an auction of women’s bodies, but after that it I wouldn’t describe it as awkward but perhaps a little graphic and mature.
My mom was a little uncomfortable during a few parts of “The American Dream”.

When I say awkward I mean like if you were watching Groundhog Day with your father and wasn't expecting some of the more sexual lyrics, or the scene in Amelie at a cirtain 'shop' or in the great comet during the abduction and in Evan Hansen in sincerely me reprise during the link "sucking d*** for meth" or during come from away when they "flash" (thank goodness they don't actually). These are just some of the moments I have felt awkward in this season, now that I think of it that feeling applied to most of dear Evan Hansen. A lot of the time the experience is taken away from when these is this awkward feeling.

Isn't this backwards? If she always holds this up as the measure of purity and goodness, then the more decadent and prurient it is would sort of be funnier, no? ![]()

Yes, it is. She's really elitest almost when it comes to musicals, and is always saying how much better they were years ago when she was in college. I would love to go to this and if it is be able to spite her, but the only thing that's keeping me from going is the awkwardness, it takes away from the show, a lot, even if she's going to realize her mistake. Even my dad was better this season than her, and he saw the original production of rent and didn't like it, so that says something.

To be fair, it's understandable that some people are not able to pay rent, especially in the village even back then. It's another thing to glorify the act of not paying. This gets worse as you grow older.

It's a great production of Miss Saigon. You won't be disappointed.

Miss Saigon is one of my most favorite musicals. It has lots of action, sexy club stuff, incredible and catchy music numbers, etc. But you should watch the 2017 Tony performance to help you decide. ![]()

If those made you feel awkward - then skip Miss Saigon. Besides the opening bar scene, one "love" scene (at least in London, Kim disrobes on stage), there is the whole Bangkok scene ("What A Waste"
, plus American Dream. It's good that you recognize what makes you uncomfortable - but it's a shame because Miss Saigon is my of my favorite musicals.

I'm a teenager and saw it with my stepdad and it was totally fine. The initial awkwardness was there but wore off quickly. You will be fine

Saigon is fabulous, and this production is very, very good, especially if you see Ms. Noblezada as Kim. The only kind of "awkwardness" I'd imagine in your case is indeed in the opening scene, so you get it over with pretty quickly (plus, it's not that awkward when you recognize it's a sad tale of exploitation, not "here's a sexy scene for the audience" ).

Doesn't Chris also drop trou during the lovemaking scene?

Up to a certain point, yes; his back faces the audience at that point and whether the top of his buttocks are visible depends on how quickly the lighting cue fades (it varies in my experience, but we're only talking about a second).
