Aladdin is described as Chinese in One Thousand and One Nights, but the original text is an Orientalist imagining of a fictitious China (basically what Arab people thought China looked like). Some scholars argue that Aladdin might have been Uyghur (a Muslim minority group in China). Although all the stories in the anthology are from the Arabic tradition, they can't really be traced back to a specific origin, so there's some room for ambiguity there, hence the pan-Asian casting.
Leung was just announced as replacing Jacobs. No start date was given or if Jacobs is going on the tour.

It wasn't actually announced by DT according to that Playbill article.
Yep. That makes this awkward!

I doubt Playbill would go that big with it if it wasn't pretty well confirmed... and if the cast is already running with it, seems like Telly is definitely Aladdin.
just weird they don't give a start date for Leung. Though I doubt IN TRANSIT is still around by March, I'd expect Leung to start around that time. He has said he's returning to IN TRANSIT on Jan. 31.
I wonder if this means the other leads are extending again. James Monroe Iglehart, in particular, seems like he has no interest in leaving. He just gave an interview where he talked about how he isn't tired of the role and how much fun he's having.

I like both Telly Leung and Adam Jacobs a lot, but I am a bit surprised in this casting because in my opinion, Telly and Adam have very different voices. They sound so different to me that I would never have thought to pick one for another's replacement in any role. But I think that Telly would be great (I am very tempted to visit Aladdin again now)!

You're not necessarily wrong, but it's entirely possible that the cast doesn't have any official information and are just reading the same rumors/reports as everyone else.

LMAO. I have to say as shady as your comment was I have to agree. When I saw the show I couldn't believe how bad Ms Reeds voice. As a singer myself I think she has a voice but her voice teacher needs to be fired. She was consistently flat and nasal. Don't get me started on her acting either.

Agreed. I think they have similar ranges but the quality of their voices is different. But maybe I'm just thinking of songs they've performed when they sounded the most different.
Speaking of Patti Murin, is anyone planning to go to this 54 Below show where she's going to represent Nerds? https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Songs-from-NERDS-REBECCA-and-More-Set-for-BROADWAY-BOUND-Series-at-Feinsteins54-Below-20170112
I agree with whoever remarked about Telly's voice compared to Adam's. I was listening to the Pacific Overtures revival's "Somewhere in a Tree" and was struck by just how high Telly's voice can go. Has he ever played a baritenor role like Aladdin?

In the article released by BroadwayWorld today "Jacobs's replacement will be announced at a later date.". So seems they're playing it safe until it;s officially announced who his replacement will be.
He def has the energy for the role! When I saw him in Allegiance he seemed to be in a totally different show.

It was never officially announced by Disney. Somebody heard a rumor and jumped the gun.

It was supposed to have happened by now, but Mr. Leung had outstanding contractual obligations. Perhaps after Tony nominations we'll get an official announcement from Disney.
