"They have a star now when they really need one, during the slow summer months."
Huh? Summer is peak season for tourists in NYC.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
The actor who might remint the role persuasively is another Christopher Guest alum, indeed his star: Catherine O'Hara. Now that performance I'd pay to see.
"I'm a comedian, but in my spare time, things bother me." Garry Shandling
"The production in general is somewhat "eh" as you put it, Musikman. I think in this production of Annie, some parts work really well and some not so much."
Must every revival reinvent the wheel in order for you to enjoy it?
Butters, go buy World of Warcraft, install it on your computer, and join the online sensation before we all murder you.

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
No I enjoyed it very much - as I have seen it 3 times actually..and may see it again at some point. It had nothing at all to do with whether or not it was a revival or an original show.
I just can say that some parts work better for me than others. And I think they made some great choices and some not so great...no more, no less.
Mattbrain, I'm actually one of those people who loves classic, straight-up, faithful to the original productions. Re-inventing the wheel often irks me (see: Cinderella. I DESPISED this production, which bares little to no resemblance to the Rodgers and Hammerstein version) This Annie was a mostly faithful production, but it jsut felt lackluster. The energy was off, transitions were awkward, there was no urgency in the performance.
To quote Daddy Warbucks "Something was missing."
-There's the muddle in the middle. There's the puddle where the poodle did the piddle."
On Sunday the 26 of May they have 3 shows. 1pm, 3pm, and 6:30pm. How is this going to work? The 1pm show only has 2 hours max before the next one. Will they lotto the shows??
I just saw that on their site. Which is dumb, because the show is over two hours long. There would be no way that it could have started at 3:00, if there was an 1:00 show.
I saw the show again tonight to catch Jane Lynch. She's a vast improvement over Finneran, and she found most of the laughs tonight. Lilla was out again tonight, and I thought her understudy was strong, although only Constantine rivaled her for most accents used during a performance this season.
The revival is still only ok. The set is as crappy as ever, and "NYC" is so lackluster and disappointing. Lynch gives a nice boost to the credibility of the proceedings though and I'm glad I got to see her.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
It's weird because Lilla tweeted that a lot of the cast of Glee was in the audience tonight and that Kristen Chenowith was also there and came to her dressing room and she was so excited. So I assumed she was in.
I'm assuming Lilla goes on vocal rest every few days. She seems to ALWAYS be out. Taylor is one lucky understudy - she seems to go on more than Lilla. Although, Taylor screams compared to Lilla's beautiful voice
Lilla usually only does one show on matinee days..sometimes off in the afternoon, sometimes at night). I don't think of Taylor as an understudy so much as the regular filler..she was the one that was on Good Morning America with the Annie company when Lilla hurt her foot and she basically does two shows a week. There are a few extra swings for the orphans that can also play Annie but I haven't see that lately. I would love to see Sadie Sink who is an orphan/Annie swing play Annie - she stands out in the group for me.
My friend and I were saying how much we thought Taylor was a clone of Lilla, so if she did go on that would explain it. The call board in the lobby definitely said at this performance the role of Annie would be played by Taylor Richardson though...
bwayphreak, It was the first time I saw the show since the first preview! There were some changes, all for the best. The biggest was the removal of the orphans as french maids from Easy Street. It really helped the number, but I still wish they would have put in the original choreography for that one song.
There were lots of small things like Brynn O'Malley wasn't wearing those Mia Farrow glasses, but overall I wouldn't say they made huge changes.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
It must have been the sign from the night before..(weird) ..especially as they are NOTHING alike at all. Taylor is really cute, little and girly...and Lilla is more like the Andrea McArdle version - tough, scrappy and certainly bigger and taller.
