Yes, I do believe I read Michael York is doing the narration. Does the narration have to be written separately? (I don't mean to be stupid) If so, will Jill write the narration?

Posted: 6/22/09 at 12:44pmThey always had narration for the readings/etc., so I assume it'd follow allow the same lines. Or, it will be a synopsis pointline and then cut to a song. I assume Jill wrote it, maybe with some help from the new director?

Although I only saw pictures of what the ending looked like in Sarasota, I LOVED how they did it on Broadway. I wish they don't change that. It seriously was perfect.
I wonder if Nick Wyman is involved too.

Last I heard he wasn't either.
Anyone know about Les Minski(Marquis), Rob Richardson (Ensemble/ u/s Sydney), Rebecca Robins (Ensemble), Craig Bennett (Cruncher) or Katherine McGrath (Pross)? All have been with that show for a long time!
#81re: James Barbour is in Tale!
Posted: 6/22/09 at 8:42pmOh I really hope Katherine McGrath is with the show. Her Pross was so funny.

^ Me too. Looking back, I realize how small her part was but she made it seem so much bigger - def a great actress!
So for sure we know:
James Barbour (Broadway) - Sydney Carton
Brandi Burkhardt (Broadway) - Lucie
Natalie Toro (Broadway) - Mme DeFarge
Kevin Earley (Broadway) - Ernest DeFarge
Simon Thomas (UK) - Darnay
J Mark McVey (Concept album/readings) - Dr Mannette
Nigel Richards (UK) - Stryver
Paul Baker (UK) - ?
?? - Pross
?? - Barsad
?? - Cruncher
?? - Gabelle
?? - Marquis
Michael York - Narrator
I'm guessing the Paul Baker guy (based off of previous credits - originating roles in Taboo, Napoleon (title role), The Lion King and years as Rusty in Starlight Express in London) would be playing Barsad, as opposed to Cruncher or Gabelle...

Guh, I loved Mackenzie Mauzy too!

Nick Wyman is not involved with this production/ recording.
He's currently in Seattle preparing for the out-of-town tryout for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

So, they are in Brighton and this is where the 'concert' is to be filmed - and they are doing costumes, etc (don't know if anyone addressed this).

Posted: 6/25/09 at 5:22amAre they making any more changes? I'm really excited for the CD. I didn't get to see the show on Broadway and I've been curious as to how they switched "The Shadows of the Night" and "The Way It Ought to Be" from the concept recording with "The Shadows of the Night" being the opening number now. Listening to the concept CD that doesn't seem possible, but only because of the original arrangements. I'd be interested to hear how they did that.

Rumor has it there are some changes, and Barbour's blog said to the ending I believe. Who knows, maybe even Charles will have a song, or "Resurrection Man" might be back in (it is sort of essential to novel, right?).
Cats, this is how it was done on Broadway:
*SPOILER* - not that there should be any?
The show opened with Dr Mannette getting dragged off stage (some performances included him singing "Before I lose my mind, I'll write this memory down..." or something like that. Then in the back, Mr Lorry and Miss Pross exchange the news that Mannette is captured, and Lorry asigns Pross to care for Little Lucie (what would be Brandi's character on Bway). All this was dialogue...
Lorry has NO lines in this one anymore apart from dialogue. The two Lucies do a switcheroo from the young one to the old when they get the news that Mannette is indeed alive. Lucie sings something along the lines of "I never knew him at all, only a ghost, now to be recalled to life..." and holds it until
its straight into the overture/beginning of The Way It Ought to Be, and the two front scaffolds were pushed aside by a "magic hands"-type thing (like in Jekyll & HYDE - I know you're a fan..? I think! with Someone Like You) and Madame DeFarge runs through and it's .. France, with Lorry/Pross/Cruncher/Lucie walking in the back of the stage into the wings.
*END*
And that's what I thought the concert would be like - not a CONCERT, more like a show case.

"Resurrection Man" isn't essential to the novel. There are enough verbal references to Cruncher's line of work without making the song absolutely necessary. The role of Mrs Cruncher was cut along with the song during previews. I'm not sure if they'll bring her back - especially with Rebecca Robbins not making the trip. And I have to guess that they wouldn't recast out of sentimentality alone.
I know I, originally, brought up the idea of the song being put back in. But I had forgotten that the song is sung to Mrs. Cruncher. And as I said I highly doubt they've cast a Mrs. Cruncher.

You know, when an artist creates something (as in the case of JillS and Tale), they come up with their concepts, expand on them, and create something nobody else can see the same way. I happen to like "RM" and felt it gave the show a fun turn, like a breather, from the heavier scenes. But, unfortunately, people complained about the length of the first act. So, instead of cutting other more needed scenes, they opted to get rid of this one, since it was rather long.
Myself, I liked "RM", and wish it had been kept in the show.
I think they tweaked the show a bit too much from the original concept in Sarasota, and they lost some of its appeal in the process.

Oh CATS I should have also mentioned that, as you hopefully know, Sydney's "The Way It Ought to Be" is not part of the same thing (as with the concept), but rather later. Also, it's more like ... Mme DeFarge's Way It Ought to Be" and then "It Won't Be Long"-esque more so than the concept album, as it also ends on a long note with "the way it ought to be---"
About RM: I think that it'd be the most appriopriate number to cut. However, since Cruncher's part is semi-important/influential and necessry in itself, they probably could have kept it, had it not been for length!
