But the thing is. Charlotte actually CAN sing quite good. But people are judging her by her vocals for Cassie - which is a bit out of her range. She has more of a smoky/sultry alto voice.

Husk- Also remember the entire TONY nomination committee liked her.

I'm not so sure how much of it was "we like her" and how much was "this may be our only chance to nominate her for originating a role"
^ That's not true. If anything it was because the history of the role.
Charlotte will get other chances. And hopefully she can do some new musicals - so people don't have to frickin compare her to everyone and their mother who played the role.
I would like to see husk_charmer aka Garrett in the role of Cassie :P

while yes I did try to learn the choreography for a talent show at school last year, I would NEVER want to take on the role (Diana or Paul, whole nother story)...I respect all who try the role, even if I dislike their performance.
I'm definitely one of Krakowski's biggest fans, but she her dancing skills are nowhere close to Cassie's. Also, she would definitely throw off the balance of the show. Krakowski is considered a Broadway "star," I don't think Cassie should be played by someone who will immediately be recognized as a star (though this worked for McKechnie her second time in the role but I think that is different since she had been connected with the show for such a long time). What it comes down to is that she could never get through the Michael Bennett choreography that even trained dancers who have constant training have issues getting through.
Amy Spanger would not only have issues getting through the extensive marathon dance sequence but I can't see her acting being genuine enough to make the scene work. I can't believe people who criticize Charlotte would suggest Amy Spanger of all people.
Natascia Diaz, Rachelle Rak, and Shannon Lewis would all be top-notch replacements for d'Amboise when she decides to leave the show.

I believe Diaz was up for the role originally...I'd love to see her dance it.
MATM, when done right, reduces me to tears.
I'm a HUGE Amy Spanger fan, but she's no Cassie.
Natascia Diaz was indeed up for Cassie when they were casting the revival.
Though there were several other impressive performers at the final callback, it came down to Diaz and d'Amboise when the end decision was made.
The beauty of Charlotte's casting is the way her life as a dancer mirrors Cassie's journey in many ways.
Somethingwicked, do you know (and are able to mention) what other performers were part of the final call-back?

I recall being told that Rachelle Rak was up for Sheila.
I'm glad Diaz didn't get the role. Her solo is mainly dancing, and I would want to save her for a role which would continue to show off that amazing, amazing voice. I saw her in Jacque Brel 4 times and she reduced me to tears every time.
That reminds me...where the hell is she nowadays?
There was a rumor on the board that Rachelle Rak had indeed been cast as Sheila. I'm not sure what the deal was but clearly Deidre Goodwin ended up getting the role. I would *LOVE* to see Rachelle Rak's portrayal of Sheila though, she's such a talented performer.
Check your PM's ray.
Wow. I've never seen Jane Krakowski do musicals before, and that was pretty dang good. Lame choreography, though.
You've never seen Krakowski do musicals before?
Get the GRAND HOTEL and NINE revival cast recordings, you're in for such a treat. (Unless you meant you've heard her before but never seen her)
I still don't get this show.

what happened with rachelle and sheila? i really wish she was apart of this production in any way, i think she's an amazing triple threat? she'd be a great replacement for charlotte, anyone know what she's doing now?
Looking back, I think Rachelle was the only one of the unofficially confirmed cast that actually ended up being wrong. Hopefully there wasn't too much drama there. That said, I love Deidre as Sheila.
Nope, ray -- I knew she does musicals, but that was my first experience of her performance. In a completely unrelated story, my neighborhood Virgin megastore will be up about thirty bucks within the week.

According to her website, Natascia is doing a tour of West Side Story for the rest of the summer.
I saw ACL back in February.
MATM has always been one of my fav songs and while Charlotts singing wasn't as good as I had hoped her dancing was ON that night. Over all I loved the show, I'm so use to seeing casts of dancers trying to sing ACL that it was great to see so many people that could do both and well.
Regarding Diaz, It's no secret that she is difficult to work with. I remember once she was called out for it on here, and she actually posted quite a bit to defend herself.
Please, not Amy Spanger. I appreciate her in pop-like musicals, but her voice is not appropriate for this show. I amn not a big fan of "scream as loud as I can" in classical musical theatre scores.
