Why indulge in bitchy speculation? I just always kind of thought that's what you do on anonymous Broadway message boards. Why is he past his "creatively fecund period"? I mean, look at what he's done lately. "13" really is the lamest thing ever, and "Honeymoon in Vegas" isn't looking much better. By the way, I am someone who loves his earlier work.
I don't see how JRB's age, lack of current hit material, or anyone's opinions on the quality of his work has anything to do with issues pertaining to copyright.

I haven't read this whole thread but the bits I've looked at contain the usual misunderstanding of the very narrow "educational use" "fair use" exception. In an educational setting, a teacher may use properly credited excerpts of copyrighted works to illustrate an educational point. If I am teaching a course about musical theater I may take a few bars of music by various composers to show the difference between Porter and Sondheim. I may not make 30 copies of sheet music for this purpose, however. College professors get in trouble because they assume that they can photocopy published articles and hand them out in class. Nope. Anything that is a substitute for a purchase of the copyrighted item is an infringement. The whole purpose is to protect creators, not users.
It's not just him, it's the Dramatists Guild who are cautioning its members about signing the new contract.
The terms in the new contract with NYMF give NYMF certain rights and percentages to future productions of the show that are beyond what they should be asking for as an organization that functions as a presenter and not an actual producer.
I think a good number of people though failed to notice that the letter comes from the Dramatists Guild, and have instead interpreted it as his personal crusade against NYMF.
my first thought after Eleanor said that her parents won't buy the sheet music for her was "Does she get an allowance or have an afterschool job". if she has either of these, why doesn't she take $4.00 of that money and go buy the sheet music? I had both as a kid and saved to buy the things I wanted and even things I needed. Just a thought.
I don't know what state she's in but most 13 year olds can't legally hold a job. So right now her options are allowance, odd jobs in the neighborhood, or babysitting. Most retail/food places won't hire under 16 and even that is pushing it. I've worked at several different retail stores in my life and none of them had any employees under 18. There were a few times I'd seen 16 year olds where I worked but most often the manager ended up being sorry they hired them.

I must have missed that she is 13. I babysat but not until I was 16. So even if she doesn't have a job of any kind and might have an allowance (Which we don't know) my question still stands.
An industrious 13 year could find a way. I was babysitting by 13. If the credit card was the problem she could always take the cash to a local grocery store and buy one of those gift cards. Though those things are kind of a rip off. It costs to buy them and you get transaction fees and stuff. But if she needed the sheet music that bad that is an option.
