The producers just confirmed Hudson's casting but, shockingly, she will be playing Shug, not Celie.
I wonder if this means they'll bring Cynthia Erivo over from London to play Celie? She got rave reviews and was really, really incredible.

Posted: 1/9/15 at 9:39pmHow bizarre. My computer has a virus and for a second I really thought this was some weird manifestation of it. I feel like if she wanted to come to Broadway it would have made more sense for it to be Dreamgirls. (Or Caroline, or Change in the Broadway that exists in my head, where Side Show and the Ragtime revival are still playing.)

Posted: 1/9/15 at 9:43pmShug may be a supporting role, but it's a very big one (and a flashy one at that). She has three solos and a huge duet that ends the first act. That's more material than the leads in a lot of shows have.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
