No, I am not on any drugs or anything. I know I am going to get criticism for posting this, but oh well, I'll be brave.
I was recently listening to "As Long As You're Mine" on the Wicked CD. I thought of Jessica Simpson, because it sounded similar to one of her songs on a CD of hers. I thought she could possibly play Elphaba. She doesn't sound exactly like Idina (and personally, I do prefer Idina), but she does have a good voice, in my opinion. If she can eliminate all those "ohhhhhhs" and "ahhhhhhhhhhhs" between words, I think she could play Elphaba.
Of course, "As Long As You're Mine" is a song that has more of a pop song feel to it rather than a contemporary Broadway song, if you know what I mean, so could Jessica pull off some of the other songs? Okay, now slap me...lol. Discuss.

my rule dumb popstars shall be limited to glinda
edit: to save being broiled, i know its an equally challenging role vocally but personality wise it requires less acting for "celebrities"
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#2
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:37pmJessica has a wonderful Broadway voice - and I think she knocks Idina out of the water personally.
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#3
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:38pmI think first she needs to learn to act. After all, she did have a sitcom pilot that didn't even get picked up by ABC...ABC!!!!
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#4
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:38pmI thinks that's not an entirely bad idea at all. PLUS, Nick would be in the audience!!!
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#5
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:38pmyes, Jessica's voice is good for Elphie, and Broadway in general. However, did you see the Nick and Jessica Variety show? She can't act, unfortunately lol

"my rule dumb popstars shall be limited to glinda"
She is dumb, but her mom claims that she has an I.Q. of 160...pfft. Now that I think of it, could she pronounce the words (El-pee-ha-buh is probably how she would pronounce it)? But putting that aside, what do you think?
Here's one: Jess as Elphie and Nick as Fiyero...how cute.

I think Jessica can act...just because her sitcom didn't work, it's not really her fault. It's the writers' fault. Besides...I thought the sitcom hasn't even be tried out yet. I love NEWLYWEDS - my favorite show on TV right now.
And I think she is smart, just the show makes her seem dumb. Leave her alone. I think she's adorable. If we were all on the TV all the time in a reality show, we'd look like idiots some of the time.

Shoot me now. Jessica Simpson is no Idina Menzel. Jessica doesn't even sing correctly. All she sings is from her throat, which is going to cause her some serious damage later on.
And Elphaba is intellectual, she's very smart, and Jessica could not portray that for the life of her.
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#9
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:42pmIdina Menzel sucks. I can't stand her. If anyone is overrated, it's that woman.
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#10
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:42pmAnd there are a hell of a lot better singers than Idina too, sweetie.
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#11
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:45pmI've noticed. I don't think she's the best singer I've ever heard. I've heard a lot better. :/
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#12
Posted: 8/20/04 at 11:46pmI actually like Idina Menzel. But everyone who plays Elphie doesn't have to sound like a carbon copy of Idina...and Jess doesn't sound 100% like Idina. I was only providing an opinion as to who I thought would be good in a role on Broadway. Maybe Jessica needs to polish up flaws (who doesn't have them), but I don't think it would be a bad idea to have her play Elphie.

Not in the least.
I think there could actually be a show written for Jessica.
Have you heard her first album? She hits some incredily operatic soprano notes...like high Es. She could be friggin' Carlotta.

I only have "Irresistable."
I heard she had wanted to sing gospel, but people wanted her to lean more towards pop because of her appearance.

Wicked's not ready for stunt casting yet. Give it some time, it will lol
BTW, I love Idina too!

Jessica Simpson is sooo breathy. And she screams high notes. Its like shrieking. I think if she went in for some serious vocal re-training to lose that, she would certainly have the potential. She probably has the strength and ability. But I have seen one too many Newlyweds/Dominos commercials/etc to EVER get past her horrible over-acting.
I cant stand it when people act less intelligent than they really are. I dont care if it makes you millions--its too degrading to me.
Jessica as Elphaba? It would cheapen a character I admire. But I am not too worried about this happening.
re: Jessica Simpson/Elphaba#21
Posted: 8/21/04 at 12:07amI don't know if she can handle Elphaba. Maybe she could do Glinda?

I can see her being Glinda too.
I think she'd be a fantastic Audrey in LSOH or Janet in RHS...and...ahem...Carlotta in POTO.

"Jessica doesn't even sing correctly."
I'd hate to spoil this for you but Defying Gravity ain't exactly a lesson in Bel Canto technique. I happen to think that Jessica Simpson has very good technique. Very free and released on her high notes. I'm not sure she's right for the role but Nick Lachey as Fiyero actually could work.
