Trust me BG2, I hate it too. But NYU is right and it's a real shame that it's come to this.

does it work the other way? seems releasing a "secular" album doesn't hurt your broadway career...or am I missing something?

Honestly, the fact is, if Idina had decent singing technique, she wouldn't have to be on vocal rest all day and all night long unless she's onstage (if that is indeed true). No one should have to do that unless they're sick or strained. And she is mic'ed!

The truth is most people on Broadway are working toward having a career like hers. Even Idina.

Truer words have not been spoken on this board, newyorkuniq. For the younger performers, it is definitely true that that is the ultimate goal for a good number of them. For the older, they want a more high-profile (TV/film) career because that is the only way they can headline on Broadway, sad but true.

Both Rathnait and NYU are right. And the truth is, a star taking time to do a Bway show these days is almost considered taking time off. They're taking time out to do something that won't really advance their career instead of doing another multi-million dollar "reality" series.

now that IS sad.

funny how people on this board are so "offended" at the thought of a "pop star" doing a broadway show. its show f***ing business. an entertainer is an entertainer, and should be allowed to branch out in any facet of the entertainment business they chose to. yes, maybe some dont do quite as well in some areas than others, but some have actually have had successful in all it's mediums: stage, screen and recordings.

i swear some of you sound as if its incomprehensible that someone that records "pop songs" would be all wrong to tackle the theatre.

jessica simpson has a great set of pipes on her and she may be able to handle the right role on Broadway if she were given the opportunity.

just because someone "acts" dumb doesnt mean they actually are. was judy holliday actually dumb, was marilyn?

dont knock the girl she may one day "knock your socks off" on the Great White Way.

I have to agree with Marquise. While I don't like "stunt casting" I have no problem with a star being cast in a show based on actual merits. Unfortunately, the first crop of "Pop Stars Turned Broadway" has proven VERY disappointing. But Antonio and Hugh were both brilliant in their respected shows.

Can we back up a second here...are you all really suggesting that Jessica Simpson has better singing technique? Did anyone here watch the "Nick and Jessica Variety Hour" where she had to use her jaw and for that matter her whole face to keep her placement while going for those high notes. Obviously Jessica has a lot of talent, and I really like her(I think she's a genuine person and that comes across in "Newlyweds")but honestly she blew out her voice on the season finale before her tour, I am hardly convinced that she has impeccable technique.

While Jessica's technique isn't flawless, Idina's is extremely unhealthy.

Do you know I seem to remember posting a long time ago, before there was so much "Wicked" mania that I didn't think Idina had great technique and everyone responded with something along the lines of "she has better technique than 99.9 % of the people out there" Have the tides turned?

I've never felt she's had great technique.

I like Idina, personally. I think her voice is very pretty. I don't think she is the best singer, but I definitely think she is good. Jessica Simpson may make a good Elphaba, but it would just be different than Idina Menzel playing Elphaba. Not every person who plays Elphaba will sound the same or act the same, even though Jennifer Laura Thompson plays Glinda the almost the same as Kristen Chenoweth.

..You're kidding, right?

What is Broadway? A street? Some say it's a street. Some say it is the best street in the world. Others think its terrible. That's the beauty of it, it's terribly beautiful. Some hate it and don't know why. Others love it and don't know why. That's what makes it so wonderful, it's a mystery.

I think Ashlee Simpson would be a much more convincing Elphie, not so sure about better because I don't know if Ashlee can hit the necessary notes in songs like "For Good" and "Defying Gravity".

Ashlee couldn't even hit the notes needed in her song "Pieces of Me", Lord only knows what she would do with Defying Gravity.

apparently she did them just fine...(unless you're speaking from only watching her mtv show in which they showed the numerous takes it took for her to record it correctly) but the album seems to be selling like hotcakes...so more power to her, if doing it wrong sells...who cares?

I agree, but at least she has a better appearance for the characterthan her sister..and she doesn't pretend to be stupid.

True. I don't mind her, I just hate how everyone acts like she is the second coming of Jesus. Her show did her no justice, it really just showed she was a terrible singer. All my friends have her CD, and I don't mind it. Of course, I'd much rather pop in an OBCR, but of all the pop singers Ashlee doesn't bug me like some others. I just don't think she could be an Elphaba when it took her like 20 times to record each song, resulting in her getting nodes.

Ashlee could definitely not be able to control her voice performing on Broadway... she doesn't have the talent necessary for that role on Broadway, probably any role on Broadway for that matter. Her songs are popular because the music is good but her voice is definitely not strong enough.

Ashlee also refuses to call herself a "pop" singer...she wants to be known as the "rocker" in the family. I'm not sure I see it. She's more rock than Jess, yes...but as rock as say, Avril...I don't think so. As for her CD...I'd much rather listen to an OBCR. I've heard most of her CD and didn't really care for most of the songs on it. At any rate...she may make an interesting Elphie. *shrugs*

I think Jessica has a great voice. I think she would be good for Elphie, but i don't think she would do a good job convinceing me that she is miserable and that everyone hates her and stuff, she seems to bubbly for that. I think she has a much better voice then idina, and don't get me wrong i am a idina fan as well. As for her changeing notes, many performers do that, but you don't realize cause you can't see the orginal notes of the song, so you don't realize it as much.
