Besides not liking Pop Stars in musicals as a typical rule, I feel she does scream too much in her "Belts". While I will admit Idina isn't perfect... She is young, she has the right style and voice for broadway and has the potential to be more than what she is right now, which is still incredible. Jessica Simpson can't afford to change her vocal styling, she's making money off of her records and dumb blonde act. Plus I don't think she could pull the moodiness needed for Elphie. She's just too bubbly and typecast to have her plotting revolution be believable.

She does yell a little. I think she definately has the range for it, and on SNL she didn't seem too terrible an actress. With a lot of training I think she could give it a shot, although I don't think she'd be as good-looking with black hair.
i thought jessica simpson did a great job at acting on that 70's show

That's not too difficult a feat though. I think she could maybe do Idina's role, yet no one could ever beat Idina. She made the role. Jessica could be good at making it her own, I bet. Yet who knows. We'll have to wait and see if they ever want a HOT Wicked Witch of the West. Hehe.

I think that strangely, she's worth a nod.
Idina freaks, get OVER it, people are better than her- and I'm sure that Jessica could create a role on her own. I'd hate to see it played the same, over and over again. I think that she has the range for it.
And...er, so what if she isn't smart, as people are saying? She has to act and sing, not win Jeopardy or find a cure for cancer. I think that she can definitely act and sing- not excellently, but I think that she could handle the role.
Jessica's voice can get very irritating, when she is doing that screaming bull****. And her expressions when she is performing a song is TERRIBLE, if she thinks she could do that crap on Broadway, she might need some help.
But I do agree, the girl has a good voice. She definetly has a great range, I needa break out her debut album again, and really listen to her voice. With some work, I think she has the potential to really handle a nice comedic Broadway role.
I think she's more fit for Glinda, but it's such a comedic role it would definitely take a lot of work. I think that if she really puts her mind to it, she can do Broadway. She has a great voice, and she definitely looks the role.
Have you heard Jessic's song "angels" ? She can saaang! Especially at the end when she goes all Xtina on it. I think she is beautifull but I would worry about her acting chops.

Hmmm... I disagree on the Glinda thing. She looks the part I guess but her voice is more raw, like an Elphaba type. Changing her to look the part of Elphaba is easy, but changing her voice to fit the character...? That's a bit bold to say. In short, she would make an awkward Glinda singing-wise and a promising Elphaba because of her singing style.
once she learns how to sing, i wouldn't have a problem with that.
she needs to learn that opening ones mouth wide like a boa constricter does not nessasarly constitute a better voice.

I don't get why people always have negative stuff to say about Idina. I really think it comes down to jealousy because she has The Voice, The Acting Ability, The Tony, and The Starring Role in The Season's Biggest Musical. She's not sitting writing negative stuff about anybody. Leave her alone.

Yes, I agree. Leave Idina alone. Hehe.

Yes, Idina is amazing. And, she deserves her recognition for the effort she puts into her job. She apparently warms up for an hour and a half every day, doesn't speak outside of her role, and does yoga to help warm up too. She's devoted to the part. As for the Jessica thing, anything is possible. With some voice training to tone down the screamifying, she can probably pull of a decent Elphaba. The thing is, there isn't a need for stunt casting when the show sells every seat every night.
Jessica Simpson sounds ok on disc. But live, I think singing the role of Elphaba 8 times a week would destroy her voice. Not a big fan of hers but even if I were, I don't think she could handle it. And yes she does have that annoying wispiness to her voice. She's a bit old for the part, but I would love to hear Stephanie Mills belt out Defying Gravity. Now that's a voice!
Oh...and I am sure Linda Eder could knock "Defying Gravity" out of the park. But she, also is probably too old for the part.
Jessica was funny on the episode of "SNL" with her and Nick but she was given a lot of skits where she played herself...so that's technically not acting, ahaha. I don't really think she'd come anywhere close to having the acting chops needed to pull off a role like Elphaba...if we're putting her on Broadway, maybe start her out on something smaller with less acting involved. Like Peggy Sawyer. Except I can probably guarantee you she can not dance that well. Poor Jessica.
yo sorry i wasn't tawlkin about idina, i was talking about jessica... idina's voice (while not the best ever) is a heck of a lot better than jessica's, in that 80% of the time she hits the notes. that's all i ask of a performer- hit the friggin notes! just because the show doesn't *need* stunt casting doesn't mean if won't have it. case in point, joey macentyre. ahhhh that's it! I'm angered! I got half way through the replys and read "Jessica Simpson is no Idina Menzel". For the love of God, GET OVER IT...Jessica has an AMAZING voice (have you heard her belt?) I don't think anyone has seen enough of her to REALLY know her acting capabilities...I sure don't.
I don't think it was the anti-Jessica thing that bothered me as much as the Idina is amazing-ness of your statement. Yes, Idina is a fabulous performer as is Kristin but as you can see they're not gonna stick with Wicked forever...sorry. It's people like you that make Wicked fans in general look dumb.
Lets see if this gets deleted...
edit to add: Jessica is way younger than Idina

Yes I have and personally I think Robbie Wllliams should beat her silly ass to death for butchering it. Jessica Simpson, whom I have met, is not cut out for the grueling routine of a professional stage actress. She complains about a 2 hour car trip to a film audition, you think she'd make it at a 4 hour musical rehearsal? Obviously, tedium is not something she deals with well...and that might be the end of it. As for Idina Menzel... I love her, plain and simple. The girl is a marvel in the acting universe. Sure, she's no Sarah Freaking Brightman or Linda friggin Eder....but who is? I'm sure at one point in time someone said the same thing about them "well sarah's no judy garland...or she's no ethel merman."

I don't care for any of the 3 as actors. Brightman and Eder had their moments, but there's a reason they don't act much these days. And Idina is decent enough, but a marvel of the acting universe? Let's not write checks we can't cash.

Ok maybe she's too young to call her a marvel just yet...but I have a feeling she's gonna be a mainstay. As for Brightman, I suppose there were times when her acting was a little bit lax, but we as actors all have our moments. Don't we?

If I am not mistaken I believe Jessica has been cast for the role of Daisy Duke in the new Dukes of Hazzard movie. I guess we shall all see what kind of acting abilities she has soon, although I dont think "The Dukes" will be up for an Academy Award anytime soon. Updated On: 8/21/04 at 06:37 AM
Like Daisy Duke is a role to show off your acting abilities.
I think Jessica could handle singing the part 8 shows a week - her music itself is difficult enough to sing on tour 8 shows a week, plus a lot more stress with traveling, etc. Jessica isn't like Britney, Christina, etc. She's above all of them. She can dance very well...I don't know what you people are talking about.
if jessica is gonna be elphaba, make sure you have a fan on her the entire time. she seems to always have her hair blowing back everytime she sings. and we may have to give more pauses in the music to allow her to add all the extra notes that she likes to do (whatever its called... sorry, i'm not a music person, so i don't know what its called).. but looking at that alone, she'd have too much fun with the end of "Defying Gravity."

Make no mistake, I am definitely not a fan of Jessica Simpson. However, Jessica Simpson is a MUCH better singer than Idina Menzel across the boards. If you take all of the pop effects off of Jessica's voice, she blows Idina out of the water. Of course, Jessica can't act her way out of a paper bag, so the thought of her taking on any role is ridiculous in the first place.
