Which is why it pays to be a member.
Though, considering the huge budgets for Utopia and this, the rest of next season, I assume, will be very....cheap.

Isn't LCT still not accepting new memberships? There's been a wait list for a very long time.

I also think Zooey Deschanel would have been good.
Neddy, she can sing for sure, but she's not a ticket seller.
Anyone BUT Kelli O'Hara please.
Witherspoon is a brilliant choice - if she'd do it.
It's a shame she wasn't cast in the Sweeney film. Here's to hoping she will be in Aida with JT and B!
Anyone BUT Kelli O'Hara please.
Thank you.
Johannsson would definitely sell tickets, but I don't think she can act the part. I'm not one who thinks she's a good actress, especially since she's not the perky, energetic type that the role of Nellie calls for. I see Reese doing a better job in that role.
I don't understand why Johansson is consistently rumored for theatrical roles like Maria in "The Sound of Music" and Nellie in "South Pacific" that require a strong upper register. While she has quite a nice voice, it's very low and sultry. I can't see her singing this score (nor can I see her natural coldness working for such a charismatic character.)
Witherspoon, however, is a brilliant idea. She has a clear, crisp soprano and could do wonders with the role (if she'd do it.)
O'Hara would be uniformly excellent, but I'm getting a bit bored with her as of late.

If anyone, it's O'Hara who is naturally cold.
Weren't people saying that Victoria Clark was being considered for the role? LOL far different casting from these young 20-something year old beauties.
I found O'Hara to be a total snooze in THE PAJAMA GAME. I found her to be a revelation in PIAZZA, though. She has a gorgeous soprano, and while she can carry a lower tune just fine, there are actresses that are much more equipped for roles in such a register. That said, I'd rather see O'Hara in a supporting role than carrying a whole show, whatever show that may be. I was thrown off by all of the praise she received for THE PAJAMA GAME, as she just did not have the required leading lady appeal in my opinion.
The Encores! PAJAMA GAME of a few years ago was cast with a Babe who had some seriously exciting energy.
ljay, I find it hard to believe that anyone was serious about casting Clark. She could be Nellie's mother.
Dmitri H. is a baritone but the part of deBecque (sp?) was originated by Ezio Pinza who was a bass-baritone, not a tenor. Dmitri is very good looking and can definitely act. But I agree with the earlier poster about scheduling. Plus it is unlikely they could pay him anything like what he can earn as an opera principal. BTW. I am not on a first name basis with him, but I can't spell his last name to save my life.

If only we could get Reba to do it...
Do what, learn her lines?
I'm pulling for O'Hara too...loved her in PJGAME and PIAZZA.
Please let the Hvorotovsky casting be true...

I'd be excited to see Scarlett Johansson in the role. I saw her in SCOOP and I thought she was excellent as a comedienne, a little feisty but adorable. Wasn't she in an off-Broadway play called SOPHISTRY with Ethan Hawke ? And she did graduate from the Professional Children's School in New York ( neighbor to the Lincoln Center, almost), so she may have had some training in the performing arts.
I'd love to see her in a movie musical, too. Maybe as Betty in Sunset Boulevard or even Julie Jordan in Carousel?
EXCUSE ME??? Any of you who are saying that O'Hara is cold or boring clearly did not see My Fair Lady. She was riveting! That woman is so talented, I could easily see her in this part. Not only that, but if we are looking to next season, I could easily see this being her Tony winning role finally. Plus, she has the perfect singing voice for the music. Also, I use to love Witherspoon, but then I lost all respect for her when she won an Oscar for Walk the Line. She was good, but not Osacar worthy. The singing she did in that movie will NOT get her through South Pacific. As for Scarlett, clearly she must be able to sing since she was originally in the running to play Maria in London. I would be willing to see her in the role, but would prefer someone I KNOW could do it...O'Hara!
Wasn't Johansson in talks for Maria in London's Sound of Music revival, but negotiations fell through because they wouldn't pay her enough? I'm not sure that I see her taking the pay cut involved in doing South Pacific, or any other stage production right now.
God, this is the Tender Vittals thread of the month. The cattiness can be depressing. Scarlett can sing quite nicely, she is, in fact, a good comedienne and has stage experience AND she's the right age for the part. For once, it might be refreshing to see someone who is in her early 20's play the role. Reba? God, she can play Scarlett's mother.

Scarlett would be such a huge breathe of fresh air. I love her realness, her casualness, and I think she would be a real person up there rather than the usual musical theater "acting" that we're stuck seeing.
Kelli O'Hara would be great- but totally expected for what you'd imagine a revival of this early post-war show. Scarlett will definitely bring something new and fresh.
I HOPE this works out- although I'd be more excited to see her in Gypsy with Patti LuPone.
