John Doyle Writing A Book About His Shows

At tonight’s ”Assassins” discussion/CD Signing, John Doyle said he’s writing a book about the shows that he’s directed. I hadn’t seen or heard that mentioned anywhere, and thought folks here would be interested.

Ooohhhh...something to keep my radar on for. Thanks, Jordan

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Oh this is really exciting! I always love when artists write about their work.

Amazing! Would love to read some of the details of THE VISIT, COMPANY and SWEENEY TODD. Hope he also speaks about the work that went into some of the amazing performances he seems to have got from his actors (LuPone, Chita, Raul, Cynthia etc)

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

It's nice to see Broadway directors writing more about their craft. James Lapine's was great and I know Jack O'Brien said he has another book coming out with his method being the central focus of it.

If I remember correctly, Doyle mentioned in passing on the Drama League's Talking Direction podcast that people often tell him to write about his shows, his methods. The hosts then concurred and said they hope he wrote such a book. So, sounds like he is!

This sounds pretty interesting -- I'm curious to read him expound on his philosophy. Curious if he'll do the copy editing, cover-art, typeset, printing, and quotes himself... (Har, har, har!)

ErmengardeStopSniveling said: "Let's get Bartlett Sher and Jerry Zaks to write books next!"

In case it's of interest in the meantime, I dimly recall there being an interesting chapter on Zaks' approach to 'Guys and Dolls' in the book 'Backstage on Broadway: Musicals and Their Makers'.
