Anyone else wanna see a revival of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"? I would love Deaf West to do it, but if not, I'd be fine with a regular mounting. I'd love the Narrator to be a Dreamgirls-esque group of three black women with powerful voices. Marc Kudisch could handle the Pharaoh track, and Michael Arden would be a great Joseph! I've always had a secret love for this show- anyone else?
Really Useful has a current revival running in the West End. Toronto will have a sitdown of this revival later this year. I wouldn't be surprised if it made its way to Broadway.
I really like the 90's revival so I wouldn't mind another Broadway mounting. I love the new song from the current West End production. If for no other reason it would be nice to finally have a complete recording of the score. The DVD soundtrack comes close, but it's still missing a few things.
I enjoyed the 90's revival as well. I saw the tour back in 94/95 (don't remember when, just that it was during freshman year of high school) when Sam Harris was playing Joseph. So I have no objection to a remount/revival, was just curious.
As a stage manager I love doing Joseph. The audience always has fun, and it's short. Any show that can go up at 8:00 and have me in the bar with a beer in my hand by 9:45 is ok in my book!
Speaking of the 90's revival. Whatever happened to their superb Narrator, Kelli Rabke? The last I remember hearing from her was when she did Children of Eden at Papermill.
Wasn't Shoshana Bean rumored to be playing the Narrator in the St. Louis MUNY's production of JOSEPH... a couple years ago before they got Liz Callaway?
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I would rather take hot forks and force them into my eyes.
Seriously.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Kelli Rabke did make quite a narrator! She's the perfect type for the role. I hate it when community theaters cast 2 narrators and then have them sing together... it makes things so confusing. I'm sorry but it isn't Joseph unless the narrator is a woman with short hair and a sparkly jacket :P
sbflyfan- Ok, how in God's name did you come to that video! It is the weirdest thing I have ever seen... Is it supposed to be funny or real, it's like in between and I can't tell.
Joseph is one show I wouldn't mind never seeing again. It gets done all the time, it is constantly on tour, every regional theatre, college theatre, community theatre, and high school theatre does it over and over again. There is no point in bringing it back to Broadway. They won't do anything new with it, it will just be Joseph as you have seen it for the millionth time.
Furthermore, Broadway doesn't seem to care all that much for Webber's shows anymore. His last several attempts at the Broadway stage have bombed, this includes new shows and revivals. I think he would have a tough time fining investors for one of his shows now, especially with the current economic situation. Besides all of his time and efforts will be put into the unlikely success of Phantom 2.
Shoshana is very talented, but the role of the Narrator is better suited for a Soprano.
