Well, it's better than a scene from a cruise ship.
I guess.

Because it's much better to promote his new album than show the lifetime achievement award.

I don't really get it. Josh Groban has no affiliation to 2014-2015 Broadway season, and yet his performance will air in a segment that SHOULD be used for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Book/Score awards, Orchestrations, Set Design, Lighting Design, Costume Design, etc. I swear, if they don't air the in memorial segment this year I am going to be LIVID. It's sad that the Tonys need to include people from the "mainstream" in order to pull the ratings/viewers nowadays. The Finding Neverland performance and Music Man rap are prime examples of this from last year.... can we just be given a night that represents what the Tonys are really about?

Well, the alternative may be that they don't have strong enough ratings so tv networks stop airing it. And I don't think we want that either.

^Exactly.
If you don't like it, take your bathroom break during his performance.

It's nowhere near as sad as still typing "Tony's" even after there is already a whole thread on the subject.

Or maybe he'll be performing during the In Memoriam segment like Cyndi Lauper did two years ago.

I long for days of a good old fashioned Mary J. Blige performance.

special performance = in memoriam
Got a fiver on him doing Bring Him Home or What I Did For Love while dead people's faces float by.

I wouldn't call Josh Groban mainstream. I think it's more a case of prioritizing performances over handing out awards.

Yeah, nothing brings in those mainstream viewers from Illinois and Idaho like Josh Groban!

Those middle-aged housewives love him. He's a fairly popular guest host on Live with Kelly & Michael, and had a pretty large contingent who wanted him to be named the permanent co-host after Regis departed and before Michael Strahan was chosen.
The producers of the Tony Awards and CBS know they are never going to get that 18-30-something demographic, but they will do what they can to pull in the 40-60-somethings (who, of course, are the stereotype ticket-buying-tourists).

I have a feeling he's going to sing during the In Memoriam segment, which doesn't bother me in the least.

Why all this hate and intense dislike for Josh? I don't get it. Sad really.

Ugh. Groban? Guess we'll be seeing a lot of Boniva and Fancy Feast spots this year.

To clarify, I have no issues with Josh Groban. I respect his artistry and enjoy his music. And truthfully I have no issue with him performing on the Tonys. Like someone pointed out, it's better to pull in outside celebrities that will attract more viewers than the alternative of not enough viewers to even air the program. "Sad" wasn't the right word as there's no need to be negative about it. I guess it was just the cynic in me pointing out the observation that the Tonys used to be reserved just for people in the Broadway community, performances and all. But those days are over as Broadway has become commercialized....which is fine. Like I said, just an observation.

To clarify, I do have issues with Josh Groban. Whatever his popularity with the calcium-deficient, when he sings he sounds like he has a ham sandwich stuck down his throat.
To further clarify, despite his post nasal drip sound and his saccharine music, he does have a terrific sense of humor as evidenced on his sitcom appearances and from his guest hosting of the wonderful UK pop quiz comedy show Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
