This is horrible news...really wanted to see Julian again in this role. He has an incredible voice!
I know it's sad...but got to listen to the body sometimes...
If it is recorded, I hope Julian is on it.
I was there last night. Julian performed the first scene and after a brief pause his understudy went on and he was really wonderful in the role. I enjoyed the show a lot more than I thought I would having read negative things on this board. It's worth seeing even if just to hear Rebecca Luker's amazing second act song.
If it gets recorded, Ovenden won't be on the recording. Why would he be? Recall that even though he was reviewed, he never officially opened the show (he didn't perform opening night).
This must have been one hell of a case of laryngitis. I wonder if it turned out to be something more severe.
He sounded fantastic in that first song last night but it was obvious he wasnt comfortable.
He's a classically trained singer who's probably thinking about the long term effects that singing on not-properly-healed vocal cords could cause. Another singer would have shot themselves up with steroids in order to perform opening night. He's obviously smarter than that.
I'm so glad I got to see him in previews. He has a GORGEOUS voice, and not to mention I think he was just really great in the part. He brought a great sense of energy and leading man quality to the show. But please don't let his being out derail you from seeing such a gorgeous show. As mentioned Luker's 2nd Act song is worth the price of admission alone. And Matt C's song is pretty great at the end of Act 1.
Wow, I guess I'm also one of the few people who caught Ovenden.
I saw him early in previews. I enjoyed his performance. Wasn't crazy about the score, but the performances were good. I hope he overcomes this and can get back to singing soon. He has a beautiful voice.
looooved his performance. For my second viewing, I was going to upgrade from my initial hiptix seat to something closer to get a better look at those pecs. Shame!
