I would like to retract my "flabby" joke . . . it's only there because it fit the song so well. I think women are FORCED to feel like they are fat, when they are a normal size and this practice should stop. Diana is a beautiful girl. That being said, she is still not appropriate in any way to play Maria. I could see her going into something that requires pop singing, but not a role like Maria that requires and phenomenal actress, an outstanding LEGIT soprano, and a dancer. She doesn't have any of those skills.

I love big girls and I love big girls who are comfortable in tight clothes if it makes them feel sexy. Because when you feel sexy, you are sexy. I agree that Ms. Degarmo would make a fantabulous Tracy Turnblad. In the Circle Blue Discount Cruise Line production of Hairspray.

OMIGOD, I know I should be offended and horrified because I've always been critical of Simon for dissing the women on AI for their weight and letting the guys slide by...

But this thread is freaking hysterical!

And personally, I don't think she can pull off Maria vocally.

I think she actually looks a little Asian in the picture. Maybe she'll do FLOWER DRUM SONG next especially after she hears there is a song in called "Chop Suey."

Regardless of her non typical Maria look, I just don't see how she could sing that role properly. I'm sure she will try and belt all the high stuff. I can't see her having any legit vocals. I think I want to vomit now and no, it isn't from all the sangria I had last night.

I am very skinny, I don't know what it's like to be chubby. But I would imagine it's not easy, and it would hurt to be constantly poked fun at because of your weight.

wow, i think shed be a good choice. shes got the young, innocent appearance and no doubt shes got a great voice. (i was a fan of hers during AI 3)

She was always extremely flat when she sang..and had no technique...glad I won't have to be near this production.

The lovely comments about Olive garden and "a boy like that" and Namo's comment have just made my day :)

While I don't think it's fair to judge her by her weight, I do agree that I don't see how her voice fits the part. Not saying she's bad of course, just not Maria..

ok, i dont mean to sound rude, but everyone is saying she doesnt have to voice for it and it requires a great actress, but do you know for a fact she cant act? sure she was on AI, but it doesnt mean she cant act, look at tamyra grey, shes been a guest star on a lot of shows since AI. and another example is fantasia. her album is pop and she came out on AI one day and did an amazing rendition of summertime (i never liked her and i had to go download the song.)

so, until you know for a fact shes enver acted before or cant act, dont criticize her just b/c shes been known as a singer this whole time. and she seemed to be very versatile on AI, every night she came out singing well, reguardless of the theme (except the my heart will go on disaster). sorry, didnt mean to sound rude, i just think you should give her a chance, b/c who says shes never acted before or never been in theatre?

I found her performances on AI to all be exactly the same. She had no variation or depth in my opinion. She's a cruise line singer at best (no offense to them as I know it can be a good gig).

She MIGHT be able to act the role. She never once in the entire AI season displayed ANY ability to be able to SING the part of Maria. You can take a legit singer and have them sing pop. You can NECESSARILY take a pop singer (especially one with shaky technique) and have them sing a legit part. It's just not going to happen. And if Diana could handle it, we would have heard that in her singing on AI. We didn't.

well then all of you who dont like diana, look on the bright side....at least MIKALAH GORDON isnt playing maria (she sings somewhere very well, but can you imagine the whiney voice "how many bullets left chino???")

I never said I didn't like Diana. I just said she doesn't have the vocal skills to handle the role. She MIGHT have the acting skills, but I doubt it. I hope she does well, but I just hope that she hasn't made a bad career choice that she will regret later. Bombing in a role of that caliber might kill any chance she has of doing any other musical theater.
