Oh I agree with you there. I've seen many a non PR actress tackle the role to varying degrees of success. And let's hope the directors/producers cast her for her ability and not her name. I will eat my words if the reviews come back positive. Just at face value it has the potential for disaster.
Now back to the petition board to get Clay cast as Nessa in Wicked.......

the directors obviously feel confident in their choice of casting her, so just wait until you see reviews to start bashing. if the reviews say she sucks, ill bash her along with you! (empty gesture)
Maybe William Hung will be Tony. I hear that he's always wanted to play that role, and he was involved with AI.
Bwahahahahahaha!!!

hhaa, magnum i love you! i love clay and i love nessa, so ill sign that petition, lol.
Who's producing it? Fox? She has made a LOT of money for them already.
as far as a 17 year old playing Maria.....hey as long as she can sing it and act it, considering that is the age the character should be. It's the same as casting a 22-25 year old in Hamlet. If he can act it, i'd rather see that than a good 45 year old actor tryin to pull off 23.
OMG, I LOVE HER! I got her CD with my bonus points from Columbia house. She sings one great "Don't Cry Out Loud". I'd cut her some slack because she really does have a beautiful voice. I wouldn't think Maria exactly, but she can pull it off. Honestly, I always thought she could sing Elphaba really well. Maybe not play the role, but I'd like to hear her sing it.
Elphaba - AI type singing
Maria - about as close to opera as you can GET for musical theatre
It's kind of like expecting Idina to play Glinda and Kristen to play Elphie. Kristen would have a lot more success than Idina in being able to pull it off, because she has a trained voice IN OPERA and can handle MANY vocal styles. Nothing against Idina vocal talents, but you can't just assume that the skills are interchangeable.
Right, but you also can't assume she can't handle it. That said, now that I think about it "Tonight" and "Somewhere" get really high, but still think she could do it.
I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!
Is Diana singing "deFYYYYYYYYYYYYing gravity" in that pic or "toNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIght"?
Ok her in the pink leather/pleather is kinda hot.
"I think she has some form of a latin blood line" -carlmagnum- anyone who is italian is latin!
^ Umm no.
And yes, she does have latin in her.
italian is a latin language. do ur research
I think that this is the FUNNIEST thread i have ever read on the internet.
Hanna, your Marni Nixon comment was very witty.
My opinion on the casting...ehhhh....there's always a chance that it could work out...maybe they'll transpose everything down for her, even though that would be SUCH a sin...but...it probably won't. All she does is belt, and a belting Maria would be freakish.
I don't think she's too young for the part, though. In fact, I'd cast Maria rather young, as she is so innocent. Definitely no older (or older-looking, at least) than 25.
And although this is a complete threadjack, all this talk about fatness and young kids doing adult roles makes me think of the production i of Singin' in the Rain i saw at West Virginia Public Th. in which Kathy was like, 39 and fat. Soooo bad.
Muscle sweetie. Just because the languages has similarities, dosen't mean italians have latin blood.
I am 100 percent Italian, and I know for sure - I have no latin blood.
I've never heard Diana sing real soprano notes though..
Maybe I'm just being anal, but as a fat girl myself, I can tell you that girl isn't fat at all. She may not be thin, but she's not fat. AND SHE'S NOT FAT ENOUGH FOR TRACY! Didn't anyone listen to John Waters that Tracy is supposed to be FAT??? *sigh*
Shoshana Bean isn't fat and she was Tracy. If they need her to be bigger, they put on a suit.
P.s. I agree, I don't think Diana is fat..but I still don't think her voice is well suited for Maria

When she went to San Jose to do the promo poster for the show she also worked with the vocal coach of the show and they were very impressed with her. She auditioned like everyone else, it wasn't stunt casting.
She has been in musical theater before-she did Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Atlanta a few years ago. I think the San Jose production is a sign she is looking to build her resume for Broadway auditions. I respect her for going to regional theater productions rather than deciding she should jump right to Broadway.
BTW, she's lost about 20 pounds since American Idol and is now 18 years old. She's quite the attractive young lady and her voice is much more mature than it was just 18 months ago. I hope folks consider giving her a chance rather than pre-judging her too badly.

>>>>she did Annie
Yeah..that's great preparation for Maria! Last time I checked, Maria was a legit soprano role. Now, if they had cast her as Anita...that I could see.... But maybe she actually discovered her head voice...so, who knows?
Maybe, they lowered keys? I wouldn't be crazy about that, but you never know.
