Question for the masses----I notice that more West End productions are filmed for theatrical release than Broadway productions. Is this economical or union reasons?

I had a werid dream on KB getting filmed the other night but it being closing night of the bway production like with RENT. Saw it on Broadway for the 3rd time with Mark Ballas the other day and I'm going to miss that show so much when it closes! Wish they would have filmed it when David Cook was in the Broadway show. He was the real deal with J. Harrison Ghee (Mark was really good too though )

I'm assuming this was done for economical reasons, but maybe also because the cast has more natural accents?
That being said, how I would've loved for Brendan Urie to be filmed (if they wanted like, a huge audience for this), or Stark and Billy to reprise their roles one final time, as that duo deserves to be immortalized.
Oh well, nothing we can do now. Excited this show will be widely available to all sorts of audiences.

Lots of factors, but the UK unions are less restrictive, making it easier (and more financially feasible) to film a stage production. I would guess that nearly every "hit" Broadway show goes through the motions of trying to get filmed, and it fizzles out for a variety of reasons (authors/rightsholders, actors, theatre owners, other unions, and of course funding). That's why some "Broadway" shows get filmed after Broadway: Paper Mill's Crazy For You, Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan, Leguizamo's most recent show, Lady Day, Newsies, etc.

Filming is still pretty expensive- no, very expensive- in the UK. I wonder if this one is being filmed here due to the links with Sheffield?

No news so far - I think they might be waiting for both the Broadway production and the UK tour to close first
