Lots of factors, but the UK unions are less restrictive, making it easier (and more financially feasible) to film a stage production. I would guess that nearly every "hit" Broadway show goes through the motions of trying to get filmed, and it fizzles out for a variety of reasons (authors/rightsholders, actors, theatre owners, other unions, and of course funding). That's why some "Broadway" shows get filmed after Broadway: Paper Mill's Crazy For You, Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan, Leguizamo's most recent show, Lady Day, Newsies, etc.
