"Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. In 1985, and it was also nominated for the Academy for Best Song. Collins was the only nominee in the category not invited to sing his song on stage, and sat in the audience as Ann Reinking performed it. His perceived negative reaction shown on the telecast is considered to be one of the most awkward moments in the history of the ceremony, and has been a favourite reference for Dennis Miller.
If any Garland biopic becomes 'about' the singing, it is likely doomed to failure. Just like Angela Bassett and Jamie Foxx were able to successfully portray unique performers, Hathaway and the creative team need to make the movie about conveying the essence of Garland's character and life, not about an impersonation.
I wonder what advice Meryl would give? She went on record after she won something for ANGELS IN AMERICA (just watched it again last night - that's a performance for the ages) that Judy Davis in ME & MY SHADOWS was pretty much the best acting she has ever seen. THIS from the "Best Actress" alive (according to Oscars, not Tonys)... mighty big shoes to fill, Annie!
And wouldn't it be more interesting to do an I'M NOT THERE take on Judy than someone like Hathaway doing caricature posturing for an Oscar for two hours? I love Hathaway, but I just don't think she has it in her to do Judy beyond 1945... few do... but, damn, if Judy Davis didn't!
Just release a complete version of ME & MY SHADOWS on dvd already (the "Special Edition" VHS is the only complete version bizarrely) and do something innovative if you have to make a movie.
P
I agree, but I am sure you agree that it will be impossible to do a Judy biopic without some of her singing. I really hope they make the wise choice not to have the actress resing it. We will have to wait and see. I do not expect to be thrilled with this movie, but I love being surprised.

How is the DVD incarnation different from the VHS incarnation of TV movie adaptation of ME & MY SHADOWS?
The DVD contains an amazing audio commentary with Lorna Luft and the film's producers as well as a featurette on the making of the movie.
^ I'd forgotten about that movie. Judy Davis did a great job, but the movie was rather unengaging, I felt.

Also, several Oscar nominated bios of musical stars didn't require the actress to sing.
Angela Bassett did NOT sing in the Tina Turner bio WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO WITH IT? Tina Turner's original vocals were used.
Jessica Lange did NOT sing in the Patsy Cline bio SWEET DREAMS. Patsy Cline's original vocals were used.
Susan Hayward did NOT sing in the Jane Froman bio WITH A SONG IN MY HEART. Jane Froman's original vocals were used.
^ Yes, let's hope this happens with this project.

I think she would be just fine. Anne is a singer...but hopefully she not be singing this part.
Plus...doens't Judy Garland deserve a movie...a real movie...not something made-for-television?
GET HAPPY? More like get disgusted! I've seen drag queens put on a better Judy show! That was the worst "homage" to Judy Garland I have ever seen! I don't care if it was for charity, it wasn't sung well, she DIDN'T dance and YES please put her in Chicago so that show can finally close!

spacedog, did you see judy and me? that was by far the worst homage to judy.
double post
BrodyFosse... the DVD has been "tampered" with post-telecast by Luft, etc. and while the commentary IS fascinating and fun you can tell by the tension in the room who was running this show. Apparently, Lorna regretted some of the more "risque" stuff (homosexuality, drugs, sex) and had it toned down for the VHS and VHS Special Edition. The DVD was further tampered with, though it still contains 98% of the movie (but its a 4 hours movie and the cut stuff is some of the juiciest and most notorious and PART of the story being told after all).
The telecast contained a number of shots and alternate scenes that were never on either the vhs or dvd release, most generally quite negligible though so its no use seeking such things out really.
The Special Edition VHS contains about 10 minutes of footage not on any other version of the film on record, including the DVD. This was sold ONLY at the ABC store in NYC for a few months. A few years later came the DVD. The DVD is missing, among other things: the scene where Judy walks in on her 3rd husband with the pool boy, more Liza and Judy on stage in London, and the "boo-ed" drugged-out Australia performance and the border police withdrawl freakout (part of which is included as a "Deleted Scene" even though it was only deleted from the VHS, not the original telecast).
Over on IMDB there is a comprehensive list of most of what was cut out/changed/recut.

This is a complete fabrication. Not a word of that is true.
PALJOEY - no one asked you! Do YOU have a tape of the telecast? Do YOU have the special edition VHS?
I have the PROOF. You do not, apparently.
Don't talk about things you know nothing about.
I didn't believe it either UNTIL I got the proof.
Talking out of one's ass is so much easier though!

I think he was suggesting that it was not toned down at Lorna's behest, perhaps, not denying that the VHS version was edited?
her quest to secure the role of Lola in the "Damn Yankees" movie continues.
MTVMANN, yes, Judy Garland does deserve a movie...with someone playing her who will do more than "fine."

here's the performance.
You're lying, Pgenre, like you always do.
You're lying through your rotted teeth about Lorna.
You have no proof. You just have your fabrications.
MANY OF THE SCENES ARE ON YOUTUBE, YOU FOOL!
I'm not saying I KNOW why they were cut, but you, APPARENTLY, KNOW they wereN'T cut for that reason.
No, the scene with the naked poolboy was cut FOR TIME.
The scene with Judy telling Vincente she can't continue in their sham of a marriage was cut FOR TIME.
The scene with Judy making excuses for almost jumping out the window to escape the hotel bill because she was broke was cut FOR TIME.
I wish YOU were cut for time. Or just cut.
P
We're not discussing the cuts--we're discussing your spurious and defamatory claim that Lorna "had it toned down."
So now you are admitting that you just made up Lorna's involvement in the cuts?
Shame on you.
What was your motive? Pure malice? Or did it just make a "juicier" scandal?
LORNA HERSELF HAS WRITTEN AS MUCH.
MALICE is your game, lover.
BEST-ALWAYS-
P
P.S. The cuts speak for themselves, neither Lorna nor anyone else, including me, need lay any further claim as to their relative merits. NEXT!
