Kelly Clarkson on Broadway

Clarkson has stated multiple times that she would love to do Broadway. The movie "From Justin to Kelly" is awful, so that's an unfortunate thing to base her acting off of (never really seen her act). I would LOVE to see her tackle Broadway, she has one hell of a voice and can sing anything. What do you guys think?

I think she's a great vocalist, and she seems like a really great person.

However, just because someone can sing, doesn't mean they have any business on b'way. And I'd rather not lose the integrity of any show just to see IF they can.

Ah, you beat me too it, even though I made mines on Beyonce. Yes, please. Eponine and Elphaba would be nice, preferably Elphaba. Funny thing, the Toronto production of Les Miserables has someone from Canadian Idol (?) to play Eponine. If they want to follow that route for Broadway, I'm all up for Kelly Clarkson as Eponine. I'd be interested to see if she can pull of a 8 or 7 show week schedule.

I don't think she should be on Broadway just because she can sing. She has a lot of personality and spunk (if you've ever seen her live, you know she is truly a great entertainer.) If she could channel that into a character she'd be phenomenal. She's known for her pop anthems and upbeat songs but she can truly dig into a ballad and emote better than a lot of actors. Her voice is rich and polished but emotional. She WOULD make a great Elphaba or Eponine but I doubt she'd play Elphaba at this point in it's run unfortunately because she's 31 And by the time Wicked would need stunt casting she'd be too old.

^^I'm definitely not saying she will, but why would her being 31 years old be a problem to play Elphaba? Willemijn is supposedly the greatest person to play Elphaba (and still is) and I'm thinking she's going to play her in the film (I hope), and she's 38...

@justincharacter You're referring to Melissa O'Neil, who was the winner of the third season of Canadian Idol in 2005.

Since Canadian Idol, Melissa has gone on to have a fairly successful theatre career. She starred in the Toronto production Dirty Dancing. She then played the role of Gabriella in High School Musical On Stage and she made her Stratford Festival debut during the 2011 season in Jesus Christ Superstar and Camelot. Melissa then made her Broadway debut in 2012 with the JCS production.

Kelly Clarkson most certainly could do an 8 week show schedule. She's been in the business a while and headlining a concert tour takes a bad ass. And I'd be fine seeing her on Broadway. Eponine sounds like it would be great for her. Annie Oakley? Even better.

I don't know why, but a lot of people come across thinking as if well-known artists (more like the ones who have the stronger voices) are very limited and can't do anything outside the music industry. Melissa O' Neil obviously proved that wrong, and I personally think that some artists can be as successful, if not more successful, than her in the musical theater world. Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce have proved, and still are, that they have the voice to sing these scores (and live at that). I'm not saying that they positively will do it or want to. But, think about Kelly at the Inaguration and Beyonce at the Superbowl, they both were singing live. So I'm not necessarily sure why some say they just can't without "lip syncing", just my opinion. Ok, go ahead, jump on me now.

I agree about Annie Oakley.

I think a lot of roles that are good for her are too small for her to consider doing Broadway. Fors instance, I think she's much more suited to play Nessarose in Wicked, but she probably wouldn't do that.

In the "I think (fill in the blank) is like a really great singer and OMG, wouldn't it be like really supercool if they were on Broadway" threads, we've had in the past week, Adam Lambert, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and now Kelly Clarkson. I assume it won't be long before we hit Miley Cyrus, Adele and Pink. I could save you all the trouble of spending the time writing detailed arguments by saying that whoever it is, some will think they would be perfect in this role or that and others will say no way, they're not actors. But then where's the fun in that.

She's my favorite singer/artist, and I really dig her whole vibe and voice, but I'm not sure she'd be a good on B'way. I don't think her voice is really suited to any roles that exist. I mean, her awesome voice would be wasted in most shows.

Justincharacter-- why do you insist that just because they can sing, they can do Broadway. What most of us are saying is: it take a helluva lot more to perform WELL than just being able to sing.

Can some pull it off? Of course, but why take the risk just because she's popular. (And didn't that ridiculous movie she did right after Idol pretty much prove that she shouldn't be allowed to act?) Additionally, the only thing putting Clarkson in a show is "creating" is a frenzy for fans. They won't even care if she's good or not.

You want to see Clarkson perform? Go to a concert. THAT'S what she does, and she does it really well.

Drama mama--- Did you see the movie? I don't blame you if you haven't. It's god awful, but she wasn't the issue. She actually had poise and charm and did a decent job with a script that no one should ever be subjected to.

If you can, watch her guest appearance on Reba's sitcom. It's on YouTube, I think. She is laugh out loud funny! Given the right material, she could be fantastic.

Oh absolutely not. Having seen both of them in concert multiple times, Carrie Underwood only wishes she has as much stage presence as Kelly does.

She's a total bore on stage (concert tour - The Beacon - 200...maybe with a script and strong direction but there is zero charisma on stage...


Should we throw her into the potential Fanny Brice pool (just to make the pool even more ludicrous).??
