Posted: 2/9/05 at 7:56pmIt is. And I believe it is easy to decipher whatthe reason is with the posters firsts post. Damm you people can be so bitchy. Sign if you want too. And if you don't; go on to another thread and spare us your negativity. What the hell do you care if we want to sign a petition? No matter how silly it seems to you..

What amazes me is the idea that my question prompted everyody to accuse me of "nastiness." I was just asking. I skip a lot of **** on this board...I usually don't get past the first posting on any thread; the intent was unclear.
As far as I knew, the revival WAS being recorded.

Your post isn't being ignored. I just don't think the producers are going to bother with telling the cast that they've decided not to record the show - IF in fact that is what they've decided. (Telling the cast formally that there won't be a CD wouldn't exactly be a morale booster. Would it?)
I can only tell you that last week I had two people working in the theatre tell me that there would be NO CD. After the show I saw Daniel Davis and he said the last thing they had heard was that there WOULD be a CD. After that I wrote to the people in charge of producing the programs, CD's etc. for the show and they said there was no plan to record the show.
That just makes a few too many negatives for me. I've said it before - the petition might not help get this thing made at all. But it can't possibly hurt to let the producers know that there is a group of theatre fans out there who very much want to see a recording made.
A click for life.

Posted: 2/10/05 at 12:08amMisterRussell, as Albin pointed out, we're just frustrated and sensitive because of all the negativity surrounding a perfectly appropriately idea and step toward seeing a cast album of the revival. Please, if you have any interest, sign the petition and pass it on to any others you know. Thank you and sorry for the trouble!

Posted: 2/10/05 at 12:12amNo, your post was noted and appreciated! I spoke with Mr. Beach three weeks ago and he also said then that the album would definitely be happening (he specifically mentioned that Jerry Herman is making sure it happens), but they just didn't know when. I was happy to hear him say it and I was happy to read your post about the radio interview. However, as Mamie just said, there is a lot of evidence that says the album is not going to happen. So, we're doing what we can to let the powers that be know that this production deserves a recording and there is an audience for it.

Just an update in the Petition....
1. Some of you helpfully pointed out some grammatical errors with the petition and those WILL be changed before being set out to the various addresses.
2. The people this petition will be going to will include:
A. Clear Channel Entertainment
B. The Nederlander Organization
C. Kenneth Greenblatt
D. Terry Allen Kramer
E. Martin Richards
F. PS Classics
G. Jerry Herman
H. Harvey Firestein
I. and the CAST of La Cage for Support!
3. We are at 222 signatures, that is a very decent number, but could be MUCH MUCH better. I'm hoping for at least 1,000 signatures by next Friday evening - let's get the word out and reach our goal!

Hi Craig!
Honestly? I am definitely not opposed to this option! LOL Really, I'd be more than happy to send some cash in if it would make this happen. That said, I don't understand why it would take that to get this production recorded. If an album could be afforded by "Brooklyn," why would "La Cage" have any trouble? Not to mention, nearly every broadway revival has been recording in recent years. Even the financially unsuccessful productions, like the Stokes "Man of La Mancha," recorded albums. It just doesn't make sense and it's really unfair to all of the people out there who love and support this show.
Take care.

H.
HI BACK..
Apples and Oranges. And I am all for a recording, so don't think I am not. But Brooklyn has a cast of what, 5 and La Cage - well.. a lot more than that. That translates to $$$. There are several more reasons a cast album for La Cage would be more expensive than Brooklyn.
One of the big reasons cast recordings for the smaller (and often unsuccessful shows on bway) get a cast recording is because it's the ultimate marketing tool for regional and touring companies. Wildhorn knows that, which is why he recorded one of Dracula and used the "cheapest" method possible. For shows to have a life after they close, people need to hear the music.
La Cage already has a cast recording and it's considered well known regionally, so there's less of a "need". A desire, yes.. but "need" isn't as great...

Craig,
Well-played =) I definitely see your points and thought of the cost difference between a show like "Brooklyn" and one like "La Cage" after I posted.
What I guess I still don't understand is why from the get-go, the producers avoided an album. With most other productions, it is decided at the beginning that an album will be produced and it is usually on the shelves within 2 months of opening. This serves as a great marketing tool for ticket sales, but it was clearly not something they wanted to pursue.
It just bothers me because it's THIS show. "La Cage" is my favorite Jerry Herman score and even if some did not like this new production, many of us are utterly swooning over it! New musicals aside, the recent REVIVALS have been recorded as if cost was not even a consideration and I just hate that it had to be an issue here.
I love the original recording and I always will, but it is not enough. If we can have so many different albums of other musicals, a SECOND version of "La Cage" is more than warranted. As you said, "there's less of a 'need'", but it is certainly deserved.
Bottom-line: What can we do? Many say the petition is 'silly.' I STRONGLY disagree and it's one more way for us to express ourselves to the producers. As I said, as ridiculous as it sounds, I will seriously send a check and do my part if all of us contributing money would do the trick. I'm not sure that producers would take us seriously if we just started mailing money, but geez! Sorry, I'm rambling now, but this thing has to happen. It worked for Pacific Overtures, how can it work for "La Cage"?

Posted: 2/10/05 at 11:38pmALL Broadway shows should be preserved on CD. It's a shame Mamma Mia! never got an OBC recording and they got a lotta money.
