I really wish American opera houses would take a page from Barrie Kosky’s time at the Komische opera. Yes, he did do WSS, in a rather revelatory production, but for his musical production per season, he dug deep.
I know the financial struggles of opera houses in the US, but I think they all could do better than putting on the same two or three musicals when they decide to go that route: use the opportunity to make art in the process. I’m confident a new audience would emerge if an opera house made the effort.

And if you’re going to do WSS, please no more of the bland Zambello production from, among other places, the Lyric in Chicago.
