Hey Everyone,
I really want to see the current revival of SP, but I don't know exactly when I'll get out there. How long do you predict it to run to?

Posted: 3/17/09 at 1:20amIt's selling beautifully. I'd expect it to run AT LEAST all summer....probably longer.

Posted: 3/17/09 at 1:24amThat's what I thought. I believe that O'Hara is schedualed to come back October 7th. I am just trying to save money and convince my parents to go back. We went in May, but I was unware of the revival at the time...stupid I know

Posted: 3/17/09 at 1:33amI saw the original revival cast....last April? I thought it was the closest thing to theatrical perfection I'd ever seen. AMAZING. Totally worth a trip to NYC no matter how far.

Posted: 3/17/09 at 1:36amI'm a huge Matthew Morrison fan, too bad he left to do the train wreck--Glee. I wonder how the tour of this staging will differ though due to most houses not have the thrust stage

Posted: 3/17/09 at 3:24pmIt'll be around the rest of the year at least. It's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Posted: 3/17/09 at 3:47pmI saw the matinee this past Sunday, 3/15. The show was terrific, one great song after another. I will admit it was a little strange seeing Liz McCartney on as Bloody Mary; she seems better suited to play Bloody Mary in a Tudor piece than in South Pacific. They can't finish the construction around Lincoln Center soon enough, though.

Posted: 3/21/09 at 1:26amI saw it tonight and was disappointed. There was nothing wrong with the acting or singing and of course the music is still terrific as is the orchestra. But the story itself is so dated, so thin and so dragging, I was bored out of my mind toward the end. I am surprised it's doing as well as it is, since to me that's one revival that did not need to be brought back. The theater was full but the audience was not very enthusiastic. Am I the only one who disliked it ?

Posted: 3/21/09 at 1:30amI wouldn't say I disliked it, but I was disappointed for similar reasons. I saw it in September, so there was all the hype and buzz. if you go into something expecting perfection, you're bound to be disappointed. the production was beautiful, the music is glorious, but I was disappointed with Kelli O'Hara and I think the show really just isn't my cup of tea.

Posted: 3/21/09 at 2:14amI remember seeing it and just loving every minute. So beautifully done. Both physically, as well as dramatically and musically. It's a shame you all weren't fans.

I LOVED it. Everything about the show is perfect, the acting, the costumes, the sets, the music, that huge stage... I was really stunned by how wonderful it was. The show flew by. The only thing I didn't like was "you've got to be carefully taught." It was not very moving. That song can steal the show, it has such a strong message. It is also a beautiful song. However, I feel like the combination of the direction and Morrison's lack of emotion during the song kind of made it a throw away moment of the show.
Despite that one song, I loved everything about this show, especially Kelli. She was perfection.

I saw it again on Wednesday night thanks to student rush. Last time I had seen the show was about almost a year ago with the original revival cast. I was convinced, that I after I saw it the first time, that I would never be able to see it again due to me being unable to afford a ticket. However, I was over the moon when I got the chance to see it again.
Both times I saw the show, I was on the edge of my seat and really sucked in. I do think that there is part of the story line that is dated. I do think that that part is the whole racial aspect of the show. But, the way I looked at it was that it was the signs of the times that the show was originally written in. And, I felt that that particular message of having race not matter can fit into todays world with the LGBT community fighting for equal rights.

Posted: 3/21/09 at 3:09pmEven though we have a black president and have come a long way in regards to racial issues, racism is still very present in America. I do not think that aspect of the show is dated, because some people still feel this way. I do agree that the message on equal rights is even more present today in the LGBT community, and this shows message relates to their fight perfectly. The show is not dated at all in my mind. Racism and hatred of people who are different, is still being "taught."

Posted: 3/21/09 at 4:00pmI have to agree with dapperchapper and winston89, the issues in the show are extremly relevant to this country and today's times. We are in a war as they are in WWII. We still have racial issues in this country, sad as that it--it's true. We are still working on equal rights for the LGBT community

I am troubled by this comment.
While it may not be to your particular taste, it seems strange to call a show set 65 years ago dated. Truth is, it was dated when it opened in 1949.
The format of the show is no longer as innovative as it was in 1949 when the seamlessness of the staging - having one scene dissolve into another was quite revolutionary. Today we take that for granted.
Admittedly it is not the very bet of the R&H shows. Hammerstein's script may at time appear simplistic, but he was dealing with difficult issues for an audience who as often as not resented being told that racism was not acceptable.
Nothing can dim Rodgers' melodies and the production is given a crisp staging by Bartlet Sher that explores every subtle nuance of the script - even adding a few of his own such as giving "Happy Talk" more dramatic substance than it has ever had before.
To complain that the show is "thin" and "dragging" and that you were "bored" says more about you and what you expect from a show. Expectations that may have been fueled by the overblown and empty spectacles that litter Broadway these days. If that is what you enjoy, there are plenty of those types of shows around. But this revival of SOUTH PACIFIC is long overdue, and just about the best representation of this show as we'll ever likely see.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 3/22/09 at 3:32amSouth Pacific is one of the best musicals ever written! It won the Pulizer. What else do you want. The plot will ALWAYS be affective. No matter the time. This production is something that we should be proud of. Like Curtains, these shows transport you back to the Golden Age of Broadway. Original story (or based on a book), no nudity, sex, or drugs. Two "simple" shows with great, and timeless messages.

Exactly- So much has changed since that time- I think that adds to the drama of the show.
I loved it.
Great cast, great music, great story.
The theater is lovely- BUT-The seats in this theater were tight, good thing I'm not tall. Many people on the end had their legs in the aisle. The lockers were a wonderful addition, how nice not to have to sit on your coat for 3 hours.
