Posted: 2/22/11 at 3:54pmI don't know if it's been suggested earlier in the thread, but I could see Jim Carrey as Thenardier. If it is going to be a Brit cast, then maybe Hugh Laurie.

I would so love to see Hugh Laurie as Thenardier and Stephen Fry in drag as Mme. Thendardier!

As Thenard? Have you no shame?
Biebs is obviously an Eponine. Sheesh.
I still say Cammack and Alain + Boublil do cameos. And Trevor Nunn could sub as one of Hugo's paintings.

I was working on Oliver Stone's The Doors back in 1989/90. We were filming in San Fran. We were told Cameron was pursuing Oliver to direct the film version. We were all given comp seats to see the show. I left at intermission. I was bored and thought the show ran too long.
I wound up working on the show for a 17 year association. Surprisingly enough, I gained a fondness for the show over the years. Unfortunately, that fondness dwindled as Cameron "tinkered" with the show more and more over the years. Yes, I remember ALL of the "little" changes. Yes, none of them improved the actual production but they did help the bottom line.
The dangling carrot of the film version was always thrown out there. As were SO MANY castles on a cloud. So, basically, don't be looking to book your tickets on Fandango anytime soon.

Tom Hooper, who's a leading contender for Best Director for this year's Oscars ( for King's Speech), has been offered to direct Les Miserables --
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/02/tom-hooper-iron-man-3-kings-speech-les-miserables.html
>>While Hooper won't be steering Stark Industries, another person who has worked closely with him said he was weighing an offer to direct "Les Miserables," a new version of the classic novel and Broadway musical set in 19th-century France. The movie, which is being developed by "Atonement" producer Working Title, is conceived as a big-budget musical.<<<

Beiber should Play everyone. In different wigs.
Lea Michele was offered the recent(ish) Broadway production, but turned it down for Spring Awakening- I imagine they offered her the o2 concert- as Eponine was the last one to be announced and they were probably trying to court her.
I am for this movie being made- but it IS a movie, and therefore it needs strong strong actors. Im not feeling the Boe love, sorry.
I am loving Hugh Laurie for Thernadier (Or Patrick Stewart for something totally different.... actually, Patrick Stuart 10years ago for Javert!)
I also agree that Miss Saigon would be a STUNNING film, the landscapes and locations would be epic.
And yes, Evita (though lower) is a damn good film.
:) My two cents.

Posted: 2/24/11 at 9:27amI think Lea Michele would be brilliant casting as Eponine...I was so expecting her to be cast in the concert.

I think Tobe Hooper is naturally the only living director with enough guts to tackle this project. Look at his body of work and tell me that he can't rip apart these characters to get to the meat of who they really are.
Amazing choice.

Thanks for the insider info, I've been waiting my whole life for a Les Miserables film. They better shoot in France (or Europe, at least)!
ALSO there's a ticket contest going on for the touring production of 'In The Heights', it would mean alot to me if you could click to vote for me to win. Thanks! http://www.beintheheights.com/timwalker

Hooper is also interested in doing a film about the tulip mania that gripped Europe in the 1600s. He might do that one instead, guess we'll see! I loved 'The King's Speech' but not sure how Hooper would do with a musical. There are going to be some big challenges here.
I wonder if this means William Nicholson's done with the screenplay?
I'd love for Hugh Jackman to play Valjean. This is going to be a hugely expensive movie and I can't see them sinking money into it without having a known name to play Valjean. I think Jackman could pull it off. He can do tender *and* menacing (I can see him doing a pretty good Wolverine glare at Javert), and we already know he can rock the muttonchops. :)
As for other casting, I'm betting they'll try Sacha Baron Cohen as Thenardier, I thought he did very well in Sweeney Todd. Or, is Alun Armstrong too old for the part? He's done film work and it'd be great to have one original cast member in there somewhere! He seemed pretty spry at the 25th anniversary show...
