Lack of Cast Recordings from Roundabout Productions

Personally, I get dissappointed by the fact that Roundabout's productions.. although they're limited runs.. rarely release Cast Recordings lately.. Shows such as The Apple Tree (2006, Kristin Chenoweth, Marc Kudisch, Brian D'Arcy James),, recently Pal Joey, and most likely soon to be Bye Bye Birdie..

I know I would/wouldve buy/bought the Cast Recordings, as would many.. especially of The Apple Tree.. that was a great cast and I believe the only other cast recording of that show is the 1966 original recording.. It would've been a nice 40th anniversay of the show if there was a recording..

I just feel the productions should be preserved with a recording.. they were still part of the broadway season, even if limited. Does anyone else agree?

Roundabout does not produce cast recordings. They rely on either the estate of one of the writers or a record album to put up the money. Apple Tree and the like simply couldn't gain interest. Most of their well-received productions do get recordings. If Birdie is a hit I imagine it'll be recorded. If it gets mediocre to poor reviews I wouldn't expect it. It really depends on the necessity to record.

The limited runs occur through subscribers, who purchase tickets prior to the opening. Most of these shows don't last beyond the limited run because there isn't a popular demand for that. It's great that Roundabout continues to present shows that would otherwise remain unproduced, but to expect a reasonable shelf life for a CD from a production with limited audience appeal is courting disaster. It's not like the old days when everything was recorded.

I wasn't directly blaming Roundabout for the problem, but I was acknowledging that it is there productions which are not being produced by whomever for Cast Recordings.

I wish THREEPENNY and THE APPLE TREE had been recorded. THE APPLE TREE had a wonderful cast and Chenoweth really did a marvelous job with those roles.
THREEPENNY would have been nice because of Cyndi Lauper, Alan Cumming, Ana Gasteyer, Jim Dale, et al but with the kind of reviews and reception it got, I don't think anyone was surprised it didn't get recorded.
I'm sure BIRDIE will get recorded.

I'm trying to think, what Roudabout show's got recordings besides 110, Cabaret, and Assassins.

The fact that there was no 'Apple Tree' recording is criminal. Chenoweth was brilliant.

Well, I did think Marc Kudisch' title number should have gone recorded as he did a great job with it, and Brian D'Arcy James made for really a wonderful pair with Chenoweth. They had chemistry through the roof, you would have thought they did it at Encores! together.
I believe at the time rumors were that Sony had made a deal to record APPLE TREE and 110 IN THE SHADE, but when APPLE TREE got mixed reviews and BO wasn't as big as expected, 110 IN THE SHADE ended up being the only one recorded. Pity since I adore THE APPLE TREE cast recording and I'm not a fan of 110 IN THE SHADE (even if McDonald's performance was a joy to watch).
I don't think the fact some albums haven't been recording doesn't have much to do with Roundabout being behind it. Plenty of revivals and London transfers (and even original pieces) go unrecorded. It's sad but it's the way the cookie crumbles.
I don't think many people are sad PAL JOEY wasn't recorded for example (though I wish Martha Plimptom could have recorded her "Zip" as, even with the ridiculous lyrics changes, she made it work, what a nice voice).

BIRDIE will get recorded. I'm 90% sure. I mean, this will be the first revival of the show on Broadway. The only other recordings are the OBC, OLC, (both with Chita), the motion picture soundtrack, and the tv movie soundtrack.

Also, I think with John Stamos as Albert, is a good reason why. People are going to want to hear him sing.

I know the 2003 revival of NINE was a Roundabout produced show, but it played at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, but it played longer than other Roundabout "limited engagements", was the show doing so well, it became an open-ended run, or what's the deal behind that show?
