Lauren Bacall as Madame Armfeldt

I think she would've been a great choice to succeeded Angela Lansbury. Though, I think her health no longer permits her to do 8 shows a week, unfortunately.
Have any of you ever saw her performing live? How is she?

I think she'd have more trouble with her lines than Stritchie, to be honest. What's wrong with her health? Is she not well?

After seeing her in Waiting in the Wings...no, thank you.

Lauren Bacall... as Madame Armfeldt....? No offense intended, but... "are you high?" from RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

She's not up for it physically anymore - very frail and very hard of hearing. Once upon a time (in the mid 80s) she could have pulled it off and probably been wonderful.

She a legend of screen and stage. Who has won 2 Tony Awards for best actress in a musical. Plus, as one of the most beautiful actresses of the Golden Age of Hollywood she most would be believable as someone who had kings as her lovers.
Not to mention she's a big name, who can sell tickets. What so terrible wrong about her playing that part?

Lauren Bacall as Madame Armfeldt

She has even less musical ability than Elaine Stritch, who has NONE. She does have the class, however, that Stritch also doesn't have!!!
Angela Lansbury is a tough act to follow in anything. She can still sing, she has all the class in the world, and a marvelous actress. I have had the pleasure of working with her twice, and she is the best in every way.
Madame Armfeldt is a very difficult role to cast, because she has to embody so many qualities. Carol Shelley would be great in the role, but would not sell any tickets. Bernadette is the draw now and I don't think they need a person in that role that sucks. Elaine Stritch is marvelous in the right thing, but this ain't it!!!!

Lauren Bacall as Madame Armfeldt

No because she's a thoroughly unpleasant person.

She would have the actress that plays Fredericka in tears. She'd have Bernadette Peters cowering at the side of the stage pulling out her raven locks. Alexander Hanson would refuse to enter the theater if Bacall were in a twenty block radius.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Jim - have you seen Stritch do the role? I've seen her twice and completely disagree with your assesment...

Cloris Leachman.

Betty White.

Mary Louise Wilson.

Leslie Caron, who just did it in France a few months ago!

When you talk about the musical ability of either actress do you mean now or earlier in their career? If you mean now, wel I'd disagree in the case of Stricth. If you mena earlier I ould disagree much more strogly, especially in the case of Strith, and even Bacall.

In the 1950s and 60s she did summer stock including THE KING AND I, SOUTH PACIFIC, and the nonmusical CRITIC'S CHOICE with wacky hubby Allen Ludden.

"Once upon a time (in the mid 80s) she could have pulled it off and probably been wonderful."

Well, she pulled off more than a supporting role like Madame Armfeldt in the 1980s.....take a look....

I know it- but I think thats the time she could have best handled the role!

Will42...have you actually heard Lauren Bacall "sing"? There is a fabulous YouTube "Applause" clip (mostly set in a gay bar). She has personality and demonstrates some mean dance moves. But the only word she could properly sing was "alive." That's it. I had the lovely experience of seeing Elaine Stritch in concert about 2 years ago here in Austin. She can sing. from RC in Austin, Texas

I saw Lauren Bacall in "Woman of the Year" on Broadway back in the '80's- I thoroughly enjoyed her performance- someone here mentioned that she is not so nice- she was so nice to the fans who waited to see her after that performance. Maybe I lucked out. And if so I am glad, as she has been a favorite of mine for many years.

Time for the famous Merman story. I've heard two versions so maybe somebody knows the truth.

Merman was attending Applause (or was it Woman of the Year)?

Lauren Bacall comes out and sings her first big number.

Merman can be heard from her seat: "Oh Jesus!!"

OR

Merman can be heard from her seat: "Pick a note Betty!!"

She was on of the most horrible people I ever worked with, nasty, bitter, evil woman.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I heard the Merman story as being Woman of the Year and "Who hired a moose to sing?"

Betty White is completely wrong for the role. In every single way. I hate when people suggest her.

Oh God, Betty White would be a HOOT!

Is Madame Armfeldt really supposed to be a "hoot" though? She's kind of caustic.
