Posted: 2/4/14 at 8:24amShe is only 27! Or is this a pseudo self-help book for young people? I guess things have changed when you release a memoir at 27 rather than later when you have a life story to tell. Perhaps she has lived enough of a life to do so. It just seems awfully early to write a memoir at 27.

Sorry, but the ridiculous memoir standard is still "Miles to Go," the autobiography Miley Cyrus released when she was just 16. Apparently it has sold over two million copies. I hope her ghostwriter was paid well.
Personally, I think you need to be at least 50 to start writing a memoir.
It's worth noting that Jenna Ushkowitz released a self-help book for teens last year. Chris Colfer also has his young adult book series. Maybe it's just a literary crowd over there on the set of Glee.

Alex Ko, who was a replacement Billy in Broadway's BILLY ELLIOT wrote a pretty good autobiography. It's called From Iowa To Broadway: My Billy Elliot Story. It is interesting how his life parallels Billy Elliot's as they both lost a parent at a very young age.

I also think that Lea Michele is way too young to have an autobiography. In the UK, though, a lot of celebrities have autobiographies at a young age. James Corden wrote one the year before he did One Man, Two Guvs here. And Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls has written two already.
Lea Michele's book doesn't sound like it's a typical autobiography, though. Here's the Amazon blurb about the book. To me, it makes the book sound insufferable:
"The star of the hit show Glee shares her experiences and insider tips on beauty, fashion, inner strength, and more in an illustrated in an illustrated book that’s part memoir, part how-to, and part style guide.
Lea Michele is one of the hardest working performers in show business. Whether she’s starring as Rachel Berry on Glee, rocking a glamorous look on the red carpet, recording her solo album, or acting as the spokesperson for L’Oreal, Lea is the ultimate multi-tasker. She knows better than anyone that it is difficult to be your best self and keep things in perspective when your to-do list is overflowing and you are faced with challenges, so she’s developed a foolproof system for remaining healthy and centered. In Brunette Ambition, she reveals the lessons and advice that have worked for her--from beauty and fashion secrets to fitness tips, and career insights. Supplemented with never-before-seen photos and revealing anecdotes, it’s the book Lea wishes she’d had in her teens and early twenties: A practical and inspirational guide to harnessing tenacity and passion and living the fullest life, no matter what obstacles life puts in your way."

A "look back" at 27?
Will she be singing "I'm Still Here" next? Starring as Phyllis in Follies? Maybe she'll get a Kennedy Center honor next year.

People need to understand the difference between an "autobiography" and a "memoir."
An autobiography is a look back at a life in its entirety. A memoir is a look back at a portion of a life or a look back at an entire life through the prism of a certain event or perspective.
So it is entirely appropriate that young people can write memoirs.

I don't think it's appropriate at all. I just think it sells books.
There's a difference. I'm sure it will do well.

Certainly more than she deserves.

I remember Kenneth Branagh putting out his first volume of memoirs at 29 (1989), after Henry V led many (including him) to believe he was going to be the next Larry Olivier and Orson Welles rolled into one.
And although he enjoys a perfectly respectable career and is a decent actor, I don't think that lofty vision has quite come to pass.

Lea Michele may yet turn into Orson Welles.
But late-career, frozen peas Orson Welles.

Drew Barrymore was 15 years old when she wrote this book.

Barrymore at 15 had a heck of a lot more life lived then most people.
I also suggest that she was approached to do this, and if they are going to pay her, why the heck wouldn't she do it? and from the description, it doesn't sound like MUCH of a biography...and I'm guessing she won't actuall write that much of it.
Hey, if people were willing to pay me to write a book I'd probably do it, too.
