The only people I know who use the turn CP time are black people. So... I don't see this as even remotely offensive.

The clutching of pearls and the ruffling of feathers is all for naught. Get a grip girls.

I don't think anyone on here is aghast or in shock or about to faint, just amazed at how stupid the whole thing was. It wasn't politically incorrect—it was just asinine.

This guy I work with who is from Mississippi uses it all the time and he's white.
I thought it was funny. Not expertly executed, but funny, and it gets funnier the more I think about it.

Ha Ha funny or sad and desperate funny?
"
Ha ha funny.
Keep the stupid political publicity off the main board.

I think it is on the main board because a Broadway performer was involved.

That's why I posted it, yeah.
Holy ****ing **** it was a JOKE. Leslie Odom Jr was IN ON IT.
None of those people are racist. But it was a tone deaf joke, no question about that.
I'm aware of WHY it was posted. Just don't care for the content.
Either way I don't think it's offensive. It's like saying asians are bad drivers. Or white girl wasted. It's just a joke. Obviously it's a blanket statement.

Just for the record...if a Republican candidate or government official had been involved with this at all, there would be a total uprising and riot with Big Al Sharpton marching and demanding an apology, and the headlines would be totally different.
Why the double standard?
The whole point of the joke is that it is NOT "Coloured People time". Had they literally left it at "Coloured People time" then it would have been offensive, but the whole point of the joke is they didn't mean that.
I suppose it does help reinforce stereotypes though by reminding people of it.
The title of the thread should be renamed.

The perfect coda to this? Some Democratic pundit on cable TV news questioned why "Lamar Odom from HAMILTON was involved in this."

It barely qualifies as edgy let alone offensive, and has nothing to do with whom LMM or anyone else may be supporting. Let's not read too much into a mediocre sketch.
Wow, I had never even heard of the term, guess I am really out of it. I am quite sure they did not mean to offend anyone so I would let it slide.

It looks like Leslie's own costume to me (?).
"
The question is not about "whose" costume he's wearing...obviously it is his as Burr. However, an actor cannot wear a costume in public without express permission. The costume itself can't leave the theater premises w/o permission.
In my experience, “CP time” isn’t a term used by Caucasians to denigrate African-Americans, but rather a term used reflexively by African-Americans, especially in groups made up predominantly of African-Americans, which is likely why it feels so tin-eared in this context. It entered my lexicon years ago during an extended stint with an African-American-run theater company, where it was used pretty much daily since company and crew members often arrived late and rehearsals almost never started on time. My experience there may have been singular – though I suspect not – but CP time was part of the culture of that company and the term was always used with humor and affection.
