"apparently as of late, I've heard Catherine has been quite inconsistent. One out of every three shows she apparently drops lines and/or is a mess onstage."

Are you saying you witnessed all these shows? B/c your post seems to be based on hearsay, by your own admission.

No, that is what I've heard from a friend in the production.

"By the way, her first verse of "Glamorous Life" when I saw it went as so:
"Darling, I waegoihsdglj
and
Darling, I ewgiuhsdfkjasdf"
etc. "

ha ha ha...well it's a good think you knew the actual lyrics then. i think you are the only one besides me with a distaste for CZJ

I don't recall Catherine dropping lyrics when I saw it, but she was definitely rushed and really pushing when she sang Glamorous Life.

(Piper, I also have a distaste for CZJ.)

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

If the cast recording is any indication how she performs the song when she can get all the words out, I still am not in favor of it. Again, not her best moment in the show and they shouldn't showcase something she could potentially perform sloppily on the Tonys. Now that would be embarrassing.

"But don't producers actually pay for staging etc.. (tens of thousands)? So what is in it for them to pay for a performance? Unless they genuinely just want the performance to showcase what they 'did'. "

Bingo. So, the producers may have contacted some of the cast, but that would still surprise me. It all has to be paid for and they won't be making any of it back. And in the past, the telecast would play a B-roll of the closed productions.

I've never seen or heard Catherine drop a line or "snort" in Glamorous Life, and I've seen her 4 times, most recently two weeks ago. Nothing about the number sounds "off" to me.

I'm surely not the only one to witness her snorting throughout the show, right? Am I going crazy?

I also don't recall any snorting (I saw it a month ago, though). I was sitting from the second row too so I had a pretty good view.

But (at least when I saw it - which was the day after the cast recording was released - so it isn't surprising) the cast recording was representative of her Glamorous Life.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Since Alexander Hanson is staying with "Night Music" (as far as I know), maybe they will do "You Must Meet My Wife."

Throughout the show? This just gets more and more ridiculous.

Can you provide specific examples of where in the show this "snorting" has taken place?

i'm gonna guess Million Dollar Quartet will do a medley of songs like "blue suede shoes" "see you later alligator" and "whole lotta shakin'"

In her first scene with Fredrik, at the end of pretty much every line or in reaction to Fredrik's lines, she would chuckle and snort. And slurring words... too many examples to note here. There was one particular line in the second act about a weather vane where her slurring made the line sound so unintelligible that she had to repeat what she was saying and just laughed it off. I don't know how my observations of Catherine's performance are ridiculous. What makes your views and opinions of her less ridiculous than mine? These aren't even my opinions; these are clear observations and recollections of what she actually did onstage. I would not be making this up to shine a bad light on a performer, especially one I genuinely wanted to like.

And for the record, I thought her "Send in the Clowns" was lovely. Very worthy take on the song and the one moment I was totally drawn in by Catherine. Which is why I think that should be performed at the Tonys, and also because the song is so recognizable.

My own observations and recollections are also quite clear and I don't recall any of this. They're not my opinions, either.

It does seem odd that of the literally hundreds of people who have seen her and posted about her on this very board, you are the first one to claim to have heard "snorting", "slurring" and "missed lyrics." Sounds like an exaggeration, to me.

And for the record, as much as I enjoyed CZJ in Night Music, I hope Sherie wins the Tony, lest you think I'm biased in some way.

He has no reason to lie though..perhaps (well most obviously) it was a VERY off night (repeating a slurred line and 'laughing it off' seems like there were problems).

Omg. I am so over this topic. Maybe she was sick that night? Maybe it was an off night?
I can only speak for myself having seen her four times between November 24th and April 22nd, I have never heard her miss a lyric or "snort."

I too am super over it. Yes, perhaps it was an off performance, but I was saying that my friend in the production said it's not uncommon for her to slip up every now and then (or snort). He also said when she's on, she's on. I would hope that she stays more consistent during the voting period for her sake. And the reason for me bringing all of this up in the first place is that I don't think "The Glamorous Life," as people suggested, would be the strongest number at the Tony Awards. I don't think it features either Catherine or Angela the best out of all the numbers in the show, even if it is the only one with both of them in it. Personally, what I'd love to see is Angela doing one of her funny bits with Fredrika into the wooden ring speech into "Send in the Clowns."

I have absolutely no reason to lie. What have I to gain? So why attack my observations? None of what I said was an exaggeration. She got better throughout the show, but it was like walking on egg shells the entire time. adamgreer, would you like me to criticize your opinions which are based on your "quite clear" recollections next time you hold an unpopular opinion? Just as I have no gain in exaggerating, what is your gain by your incessant badgering of my statements about a particular show I saw, which formed my not-so-bright opinion of a performance that is lauded by "literally hundreds of people who have seen her and posted about her on this very board"? Should opinions be suppressed if they're not completely in line with everyone else's? Am I not allowed to be the first one to comment negatively about something? How should I better serve you, adamgreer, so that I can make the world and BroadwayWorld a better place?

There are three performances I'll be rooting for come Tony time and I would be very happy if any of these three win: Christiane Noll, Kate Baldwin, and the most likely of the three, Sherie Rene Scott.

But didn't your friend just join recently in a temporary position? Come on now. I've spoken with people who have been there since the start, and they absolutely adore CZJ and her performance, and they never mentioned her "snorting" or missing lyrics.

Anyway, Can we ALL just move on now?

Regardless of when he joined the company or for how long he is contracted, his observations are for performances in the past few months. Eight shows a week for a few months would be enough to make an observation, no?

And why is everyone here putting the word "snort" in quotes as if it's some mysterious thing from the beyond? Haha. Let's Start Predicting the Tony Numbers
