You are a pathetic race-baiter. Know it and deal with it.

The contention that someone understands music by virtue of their race is absurd. I neither know how to play the sitar nor do I understand the very complicated scale of Indian music.

Could you admit if an Indian singer sang Indian music badly?

OMG! Everyone in India thinks they are either a popstar or the next Prem Joshi. Bad singing abounds. The very high pitched pop-Hindustani style makes me crazy, especially when done badly. Music in India is a science. It's all based on the vedas.

I hate when the constant accusation levelled at Fantasia is that she screeches and screams , this is a criticism that is levelled at her by anyone too lazy to follow her career , she's not screeching here for instance

Yes she might be a great singer....it is just (unfortunate if it is not ture) that everytime i have heard her sing she had this screeching tone to her voice.

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

i personally enjoy fantasia but i have heard her screach a few times when she has performed live. i think she doesn't always use her breath to support her voice. i find her appealing personally and would be very curious to see if she has the ability to carry an acting role.
i think jennifer has a lovely tone and she is certainly trained. they wouldn't have chosen her for a gazillion dollar film if they hadn't seen it in her.

Hopefully this report is truely the case. I am quite happy that Jennifer got the role. She was robbed in AI. I think she's more suited for the role than her AI cohart.

I too agree this is brilliant casting. I just had such a hard time envisioning Fantasia in the role.

It just didn't work for me.

But I loved Jennifer in AI, and was gunning for her to win...

GREAT! That's awesome.... I had been hoping that it would go to Jennifer, even though every rumor as of late seemed to be pointing to Fantasia. I much prefer Jennifer's voice, especially for this particular part. I loved her rendition of "And I Am Telling You...". I had hoped that they'd find a dynamite unknown, but for me this is the next best thing.

I think that this is really good casting...I'm sure that Jennifer's screen test was great, or there's probably no way that she could've gotten it over Fantasia, who seemed to have everything going in her favor.

Do some people honestly believe that because they have dark skin they automatically understand everything there is to know about gospel music? That's the dumbest "entitlement" argument I've heard in a long time.

Do white people automatically understand everything there is to know about opera?

Give me a break. You can't presume to know the background and experiences (professional or otherwise) of people who post on a message board.

Pre-judging like that is... well... prejudice.

In other Dreamgirls business... I can confirm the little tidbit also in that piece that Usher is indeed out; I interviewed him a couple of days ago, and he said that he is indeed out. Mostly a scheduling issue.

Color of the skin has nothing to do with being able to understand/judge gospel music. HOWEVER, growing up in that setting does. It's just a matter of how much actual experience you have with the form. Yes, there is a such thing as a "gospel scream" or "squall." It's very similar to a "rocker scream."

Just to put the issue to rest. Fantasia is not screaming. Do any of you who claim she's screaching/screaming think that she could actually sing like that if she was screaming? Jennifer Hudson is not a refrence point for the gospel scream, she does a lil growling here and there, but she's not a good example. Check out the legendary Clark Sisters. They perfected the technique. Also, check out Kiki Sheard (Karen Clark of the Clark Sister's daughter) who also auditioned for Effie.

HOW DARE YOU say that someone was being racist when you yourself is being one GIGANTIC racist by saying that only black people know about black gospel music. Granted, I am not an expert on it, but I do know a growl when I hear it. Oh and can you PLEASE you correct grammar when you are insulting someone? You make yourself seem more ignorant that you already are.

I too am pleased for Jennifer. I like Fantasia's voice, but think that she would be better suited for Lorrell than for Effie.

All this searching and they end up picking Jennifer anyway? Can she hold up against Beyonce (I'm not talking about vocally)?
