Posted: 8/25/05 at 11:54amI'd see "Hairspray", but I absolutely DESPISE the Lion King. I thought it was the most boring shows I'd ever seen, and I've seen "CATS"! I wasn't impressed with the costumes either. I didn't think they were THAT original.

Hairspray. Lion King is crap disguised as art.
If you've seen Hairspary, there are plenty of other things you can see. Spelling Bee, THe Light in the Piazza, or Ave Q. Hell, I'd even take Chitty over Lion King.

I love both. Can you fit both in? If not see Hairspray with Vilanch. His Edna is DIVINE.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 12:06pmI agree that Hairspray is a better show, but if you've already seen it, why not see the Lion King and make up your own mind about it? Chances are, if you liked the film, you will at least find something to like about the stage version.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 12:37pmThere is no doubt that "Hairspray" is a better show. That's my opinion, and it seems to shared by many in this thread, BUT, if you've seen it already and your only other choice is "The Lion King" then why not see that? It's by no means a great show but it's also not as awful as some have said. The costumes and the opening number alone may make it a worth at least one viewing.

I would choose Hairspray (may be easier to get tickets to), however, if you haven't seen Lion King why not see that? Maybe you'll love it. It depends on what you're looking for in a show. Hairspray is about the fun, laughter, comedy, and the dancing, while I think Lion King is more about the visuals, scenary, and costumes.

It's remarkable to me that people are so hard on The Lion King. The Lion King is an absolutely beautiful demonstration of the marriage of High Brow/Low Brow, Children's Theater/Adult Elitism, Western Art/Non-Western Art... Hairspray is cute and very well written (and might turn out to be one of the better traditional "musical comedies" of the decade) but The Lion King is an artistic performance. It's possible that the current cast of the Lion King might not be up to snuff... I haven't seen it in a while... but Julie Taymor's accomplishment with The Lion King would unbelievable if it wasn't true... she took a CARTOON about animals and transformed it using Asian/African/European theater styles as well as good old fashioned musical comedy techniques into something enjoyable and meaningful to people of all ages and cultures... the ideas, songs, and images presented by The Lion King should stay with you for a while... However if you're bitter or sneer at geniune creativity... AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

The Lion King is a spectacle, not the best musical theatre. It has beautiful moments, but my eyes got lost while watching the show because there is just too much going on stage between lines, set, costumes, etc. I think it would be better done simpler.
I havent seen Hairspray, but hope to someday.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 2:02pmThere is nothing artistic about Lion King. I don't find the designs remotely creative nor the puppetry visually stunning. The show is so bland and unispring I remember asking my friend why people were lining up to see it. I almost fell asleep twice. And with Disney's money, it's not surprising there is so much scenery. That doesn't make it creative.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 2:03pmI would also recommend Hairspray of the 2 musicals you have listed. But, since you've already seen Hairspray, see something new. Are you taking children and need something that will be appropriate for them? That can also play into what can be recommended. Also, what have you already seen?

I guess it's an opinion thing... Julie Taymor is sort of a take it or leave it proposition.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 2:10pmI know that one of the reviewers (can't remember who) who originally LOVED The Lion King, went back to see it a year later and said it wasn't as good as what was there at opening. I really think the actors feel (for the most part) that they can hide behind the "puppets," and I almost feel that the producers are casting it with the same thing in mind. As long as you fit the costume and can manipulate the puppet, it's okay.

Hairspray.
The Lion King is tired and has been for some time. I think a lot of the backlash stems from it beating out Ragtime for Best Musical that year. Yes, Lion King was beautiful to look at, but that was it. I was completely bored. Ragtime was a much better show.
