Sorry, i don't have time to search this so please forgive me if this was brought up but do you think The Little Mermaid is going to get nominated for any Tonys?
What categories?

Score and songs sure.
And perhaps Sherie or Sierra

Despite the mix reviews, the innovative Katz lighting, wonderful Menken score, and the visually delightful set design may get a Tony nomination.

Posted: 1/19/08 at 7:09pmI doubt it will get many nominations, and even fewer wins. There are plenty of other musicals this season, and I doubt that Mermaid would get a tony in any categories against musicals that have already opened, let alone the one that are coming.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Posted: 1/19/08 at 7:18pmDon't forget that four new musicals are opening soon, one in February, and three in March/April. Doubt that they are any worse than Mermaid.

Xanadu
Passing Strange
A Catered Affiar
Cry Baby
In The Heights
All of these have opened (somewhere, if not Broadway) and got better reviews than Mermaid. And this isn't even counting Young Frankenstein. Mermaid will proably get at least some noms (Lestat and Tarzan did), but it's not a weak enough year to think that they'll carry away many/any actual prizes.
I think there greatest hope lies with Sherie Rene Scott for Best Featured Actress. But even there, the compitition is stiff.

Posted: 1/19/08 at 7:31pmThat's my point. It will get nominations, because Lestat and Tarzan (which I'm assuming were worse) both at least got one.

Tarzan was worst than Mermaid.
And...?
They don't nominate Disney shows if they make them better than the last one. It's all about the shows it goes against...it's not exactly a weak season for musicals.

I don't understand why critics say Mermaid is horrible.
I hear the songs (the new and the olds) and I see all videos (there are new videos in the official page) and it's seem SPECTACULAR, Sierra is fantastic, the songs are so beautiful (If Only is one if the best songs I've ever heard) and all the cast is amazing.........
Tarzan was a error, yes, but Mermaid is better

You're right, it is a better error

I think the best chances are:
Orchestrations
Score
Lighting
Scenic
Actress
Featured Actress

Posted: 1/19/08 at 9:18pmAs someone who really enjoyed the Little Mermaid, I think its best hopes are in lighting, set and costume design, and featured and leading actress (Sierra may get a nod as the newcomer). Sherie Renee Scott deserves a nod-she's really quite good as Ursula. And Sierra Boggess, for someone making her Broadway debut, really possesses such stage presence! Amazing.

Posted: 1/19/08 at 9:23pmThe critics trashed the set most of all. People have said it looks like plastic dildos.
#22re: Little Mermaid Tony Chances?
Posted: 1/19/08 at 9:27pmThe sets were fine but not sure they will get nominated. I suspect it will get nominated for lighting and Sherie may get nominated.
