Loving You: The Untold Sondheim podcast

I really appreciate that. But 1) isn't it odd that Milnesdoesn't take into account that when Sondheim says "A litte camp goes a long way" (I'm probably not getting thatquote exaclty right) might be referring to the American concept of camp and explain the discrepancy? Also, Milnescalls Beat the Devil "camp," which is just weird, in terms of either the American or British use of the term."

I think the connection too is that obsessively loving Beat the Devil is camp, in and of itself.  It connects to diva worship, etc.  Not always to the actual qualities of the film itself.

Loving You: The Untold Sondheim podcast

I will just add when they made the announcement of the new Peter Jones musical project, I had hoped that it would be a recording of Peyton Place, a teenage obsession of mine and I really liked Blueyellow...  And it was strange that they mentioned Mia's connection to the material, but never got her reaction (maybe she didn't give one given that she never talks about that early time in her career.)

Speaking of, on social media, I won't say where, someone who is a big Woody Allen AND Sondheim fan, has discounted this entire podcast because he says he knows that Sondheim was never friends with Mia and would never believe her lies.  OOoh boy.

That reminds me of the time I heard someone say "I don't think I've seen Bigfoot. I know I have."

I don't know how many posters already knew this but you can watch Sondheim's memorial service at TOFT if you're interested in more stories.

Usually I wouldn't say that mattered, but I've gotten a bit annoyed lately with the writing about Sondheim that seems to keep his sexuality as a footnote and I think it is because it's mostly been written by straight men who either aren't comfortable addressing that, or feel his sexuality shouldn't be relevant (even though there's been much talk about just how being Jewish bears on his work or not--and let me tell you, he was a nonpracticing homosexual, not a practising Jew.)"

I think it has more to do with the fact that, rightly or wrongly, Sondheim himself treated it as a footnote.

"we all know about one type of sex Sondheim was into--in the podcast they make this clear as well I thought"

Not all of us know, and if they did, I missed it entirely.

"

This is the about the only explanation that would make sense to me. I guess Jones' superb, uppercrust delivery (she gives me the impression she'd have been wonderful in Blithe Spirit or Private Lives) and Lollobrigida's phonetically learned English performance could be treated as camp. But this podcast is the first time I've every heard anyone refer to the movie as being so.
