so i guess this means she can sing.. i'd still like to hear it for myself before i pass judgement..
i wish her luck though!
sophie. anne. hathaway.
Sophie: Brittany Murphy.
I think Brittany Murphy is almost too old...
Not with Meryl Streep playing Donna she's not.
And her voice is great for Abba music.
You know, Meryl's daughter isn't too far from 20. Will we have a mother-daughter team?
But if they are going to go for Streep, they are going to have to get more popular young names for the daughter and her friends if they want any kind of marketing angle. I bet they go the "HAIRSPRAY" route and we get the cast of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL as the younger roles.

I know the perfect one: Emmy Rossum! The producers wouldn't break the movie budget if they sent her to the barber for a hair coloring. But this is perhaps not necessary since they could go with the look from the playbill. She has the natural femininity which suits the role and she can definetely sing in comparison with all the Hollywood folk. She also has a very photogenic face. Ok some might say that she didn't turn Phantom into a success but she is more famous now and she will have the help of a lot of stars beside her. And i think counting the dvd sales Phantom is actually a success. And most importantly, she can actually sing, perhaps not operatic tunes but that is not required here.

Emmy Rossum is way too vapid for a campy movie musical featuring ABBA music.
And Anne Hathaway needs to hold out for Louise in that above mentioined GYPSY remake...
Agreed.
She is 20 years too old to play the part and THIS is what she does as her first film musical?
She should be in FOLLIES or COMPANY not some drivel like MM.
If she is going to slum then they should get Bette and Barbra to be the other two women in the film.
I was too scared to say it fflag but I wouldn't at all be surprised if they went after Streisand. Or Goldie Hawn.
Bea, Betty, and Rue must have all had conflicts.

Well isn't Sophie a vapid character? When she sings i have a dream at the end of the movie the audience should be stirred and not on the verge of laughing. Ok i know the musical does not have a dramatic arc which creates any deeper feelings but with an actress and singer like Emmy Rossum that scene in itself could be stirring. Agnetha in ABBA was very feminine and beautiful and i think the actress playing Sophie should be just that.

I am always very excited to hear when Meryl Streep is cast in another movie--and the fact that this next one is a musical...however, even though Meryl Streep is a goddess and can do no wrong, I can't help but think this is an odd choice. Not that I won't be at the opening night showing on cloud nine...
I just don't think Streisand would ever consider a secondary part in a musical, particularly a fluffy musical.
I think Bette and Cher would be a blast however.
Emmy just looks like a deer in the headlights. There is a reason her film career hasn't really taken off since PHANTOM....

As much as I LOVE Meryl, isn't she kinda too good for this project? She won't even have to dip into her sea of talents, but maybe that's what she wants, just to have fun and really SING and DANCE. I honestly just thought it sounded like the perfect project for MADONNA, and she is so inspired by ABBA as of late too.
Makes you wonder who the role was offered to and who turned it down or pursued it and why. Does this kind of movie make more money with MADONNA or MERYL above the title? Did the producers get their first choice?
Well one thing we can be sure of now is that MAMMA MIA! will be Oscar-nominated!
This over Lovett?! Ugh...though it will make this a much better film.
I urge everyone to rent Ironweed for the once scene where Streep sings. If you ever doubted her for a second, that will change your mind that she can sing, and is one of our greatest actresses.
What about Diana Degarmo as Sophie?
Well, doodle, it's not like this music is exactly Sondheim.

Well perhaps there haven't been any deer roles around for her to play. I accept and understand your view but i see Sophie as a deer role.
If the screenwriter does her job, Sophie will not be a "deer in a headlight" role. I frankly never got that impression watching the stage show. Most of the actresses I've seen play Sophie have been spunky and a lot of fun.
I'd never classify Rossum as spunky and fun. Etheral maybe - but not spunky.
ACT's production of HAPPY END (In San Fran) got a cast recording. I order it today. But for somereason I could only order it through Dress Circle in the UK!

Rossum can't sing, so that's an issue.
Or at least, if she can, her falsetto-boringness in Phantom surely didn't show it off.
I'm sure Streep had her reasons for turning down Lovett. I mean we all know that's a great role and show but we haven't seen the screenplay for Burton's take on the work yet. I have a feeling when we see the film we'll understand her choice. Her next to Depp would have been a little bizarre too.
However, I don't see her reasons for doing Mamma Mia. That's about the last thing I ever thought she'd do.
Meryl Streep, Cher, and Kathy Bates
Sophie is an unknown. They'll cast the part via a realty TV show: "DANCING QUEEN."
The three possible fathers:
Donny Osmond, Billy Crystal, and Kevin Kline.
