Posted: 4/11/10 at 10:42pmI bet this will get a Best Musical nod now. That was a very nice Times review.

Posted: 4/11/10 at 10:42pmHe may have liked it, but it doesn't seem like the kind of review that will cause a stampede to the box office.

Posted: 4/11/10 at 10:42pmand thus, Million Dollar quartet is the new Jersey Boys meets Rock of Ages. My advice: be scared.... very scared...

Posted: 4/11/10 at 11:13pmI don't know, but this review is enough to convince me that he might as well, because I will never earnestly read his criticism again.

Isherwood's only claim to literary achievement prior to joining the NYT is the biography he wrote of gay male porn star Joey Stefano -- Ecstasy and Wonder Bread -- need one say more?

Posted: 4/11/10 at 11:21pmI found the plot to be very manufactured and repetitive at times... "That was a good one. Now let's play that other song you wrote..." Wouldn't recommend it...

Posted: 4/11/10 at 11:25pmThe thing is, I enjoyed Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages. Neither is my favorite show of all time, but I had a good time at each, for very different reasons. This show, though...I'm floored by the positive notices.

The difference between Jersey Boys and Million Dollar Quartet is that with Jersey Boys, you got to hear the stories from the men themselves, which made it interesting.
With Million Dollar Quartet, you have Hunter Foster's character telling the entire story, when I'd much rather have heard it from the mouths of the men themselves. I'd have much rather heard how Elvis missed Sun Records and Sam from him, rather than from Dyanne.

These reviews imo are overly kind and seem to be applying a much lighter standard of critique than many shows will ever get...
You know, I didn't hate it because I probably went into it with low expectations, but it (and some of the people I saw in the audience) seem like the special education show of the season... like we won't be too hard on you...
but in the end these reviews make it sound like it's more enjoyable than, for ex. Addams Family, which -- although truly flawed in many ways -- is a much bigger attempt at a musical than this ever was... Why should that get pummeled by the critics when MDQ brings almost nothing original to the stage?

Posted: 4/12/10 at 12:19amI've never really cared for that line of thought Contini. Doesn't a "bigger attempt" just mean the possibility to fail is bigger? If something tries more and fails, that doesn't make it "better" than something that tries little and succeeds. These reviews are basically saying that it's not a great piece of new theatre, but it's enjoyable; it is what it sets out to be.

Posted: 4/12/10 at 12:29amGranted I haven't seen the show yet but, based on these reviews, it seems to me that Levi Kreis will get a Featured Actor nod. Thoughts...?

"... If something tries more and fails, that doesn't make it "better" than something that tries little and succeeds."
Maybe... but eventually these lower risk, plotless "shows" (in quotes, because I question whether MDQ is really a show vs. a review with the tiniest story attached) get critical approval and encouragement, while the more complicated, more ambitious shows get aggressively smacked down in a way that is much out of proportion to their creative attributes

Posted: 4/12/10 at 12:35amIn all honestly, my only problems with this show were the TERRIBLE book and Hunter Foster. I wouldn't want it to be nominated for either of those things, but honestly I think this deserves a Best Musical nod over something like Come Fly Away or Memphis. I could easily see the nominees being Fela and Everyday Rapture, with the last two spots being taken by some combination of Million Dollar Quartet, American Idiot, Sondheim on Sondheim based on the reviews of the latter two.

Posted: 4/12/10 at 12:50amAt the same time, I don't think it's very good to uplift something that's ambitious but awful. Doesn't that just promote mediocrity just as much as giving a positive review to a good, but safe, show? Maybe even more so? Updated On: 4/12/10 at 12:50 AM

Posted: 4/12/10 at 7:34amI saw this show and Addams Family in Chicago, and I enjoyed Addams and really didn't care for Quartet. I guess when I'm laughing hysterically I can ignore poor writing, but when it's a more dramatic piece, that book better be good!

This piece of crap should be playing in Vegas, along with some other shows passing themselves off as Broadway musicals. What happened to all the lovely book musicals with a story to tell, with characters you got to know throughout the evening (like Finian's Rainbow and Ragtime this season)? Oh that's right, that's too much for Jane and John Smith (average theater goer) to handle.

As summed up in the USA Today review:
"All told, you're better off staying home and taking some old records off the shelf."
I might add, then go to YouTube and seek out some Levi Kreis videos, since he was the only one worth watching in this would-be Broadway show.
