Concord Theatricals handling the cast recording presumably means that they'll also be handling licensing once the Broadway run ends.

I know lots have said the show relies so heavily on Crystal's charisma that they don't see it having much of a life outside Broadway, but as a community theatre guy I'm always on the lookout for new material.

Sneak preview of the finale, "Stick Around":

Anyone that's seen this show, what is its context? Just curious.

He gets offered a good movie role by a Spielberg type that was supposed to go to Walter Matthau instead, after a long dry spell from major acting/comedy work. And I think he rekindles some things with his brother and daughter? It's about how lives are long and people have to "stick around" to see where they end up.

Looking forward to being able to listen to Shoshana Bean’s songs (especially There’s a Chance) and What If I Said. The rest will be… interesting. A Little Joy has potential and Timing is kind of fun, but in general the music is not the strong point of this show; it’s the first time I’ve ever actually thought “this shouldn’t have been a musical.” But nonetheless I’m glad it’s getting recorded; I wish it was a forgone conclusion that every Broadway and other high profile musical would be. Any cast recording is fun to listen to at least once

I just finished listening to the original Broadway cast recording of "Mr. Saturday Night" on Spotify, com, This is a first for me since I have previously purchased the cd of the recording. I was wondering if there are liner notes obtainable when you listen to a digital version of the o.c. recording?

I think that the wonderful cast of "Mr. Saturday Night" did a fantastic job in singing the 17 musical numbers. The songs themselves are pleasant but not exceptional. This may be the musical with the most uses of the f-word in the lyrics.

I was supposed to see the show at one of the cancelled performances due to Billy and Shoshana having caught Covid-19. I don't plan to reschedule seeing the show but will always have fond memories of the original movie version which I totally enjoyed.

You mean to tell me something else this season is actually rivaling Diana’s The Dress?

Just gave this a first listen. Brown's music hews close to his Honeymoon in Vegas, with all the jazzy, piano-and-brass-heavy influences. "Timing" reminds me of "When You Say Vegas" a bit. It's nice to hear him tap into some Latin-inspired numbers ("At Farber's", "Stick Around" ) and traditional balladry as well.

Billy Crystal sounds... okay, I guess? Don't know how he sounds live compared to this. At least he can carry a tune.

Shoshana's numbers are a delight, as is "What If I Said?", which Chasten Harmon delivers beautifully.

"Wanna commit career kamikaze? Act like that f**ked-up old Ashkenazi!" GAGGING. Some of the lyrics in this show are just brilliant (and this rhyme puts "Camilla / Godzilla" to shame).

When the ukelele came in during "Tahiti", it reminded me a bit of "A Summer In Ohio".

I think a bit of "We're Live" going into the three ensemble players introducing Buddy, followed by "Unbelievable" would be a good Tony performance for this show on Sunday.

I look forward to seeing this live for the first time later this week.

This show desperately needed a larger orchestra, better orchestrations, and a third-party orchestrator (not JRB) to help make up for the limitations of the score & singers. The current 6-piece orchestration is all rhythm and 2 brass; even adding two reeds and perhaps a second trumpet would have made the score sound so much more interesting/varied.

It's a charming cast performing a less charming score. If the character is supposed to be middle of the road it sounds as if the score was written to be as well. Billy Crystal has the charisma, of course, to carry the songs tailor made for his voice but the women are the real stars on this album.
