Biceps and triceps and veins, oh my! Biceps and triceps and veins, oh my!
Period yes but not the original costume. I think you are right EugLoven it definitely shows off his assets!
That is the costume they are putting Mario in ... they ditched the sweater because they wanted to show off his upper body more. Nothing wrong with that, but he looks so young ... more like a Mike than a Zach. No matter what, casting any celebrity in ACL completely goes against the grain of the show. Michael Bennett would be mortified.
Oh WestVillage that is VERY upsetting! It is so disheartening the route this revival is going down.

well, as far as "original" costumes go...when the show first opened in 76 greg wore a black turtle neck with a yellow shirt over it (which was later changed), bobby wore a red scarf, shelia wore a flesh-toned leotard and val didnt wear a headband.
all that was changed in the revival too.
I remember reading somewhere that in the original production some of the characters on the line had the option of wearing a winter outfit or a summer outfit depending on the weather. If Mario doesn't wear the sweater in an actual performance it wouldn't set a new precedent.
The original run of ACL did go thru some costume changes. When they were keeping the show "in the present" (as opposed to setting it in 1975), costumes were updated with bell-bottoms, leg warmers, etc. Greg's costume did change from the "bumblebee" costume to the black outfit with the boots. Also, due to the temperature in the theatre during cold months, many of the cast members had "winter layers", i.e. sweaters or long-sleeved leotards. There's a chapter in The Longest Line completely devoted to the costumes, and all the changes throughout the years are discussed.
Thanks WestVillage. Now I remember where I read that information about the winter layers.
BTW, I'd forgotten about "Breaking the Surface, the Greg Louganis Story". Lopez was pretty good in a role that must have been a huge risk for him at the time.
Michael Bennett would be mortified.
On the contrary. I think he would have loved Mario and he REALLY would have loved how upset everyone is getting.
I agree with PJ, if Lopez can handle it (and I think he can) Bennett would have no problem. If anything, Bennett would have had issues with the performances of d'Amboise and Berresse.
I agree with MadBrian...something we do ONLY here on the main board and never on the Off Topic Board!
Well, sometimes we agree on the Off-topic board, but it's usually about a youtube clip of Garland or Stritch.
Bennett would not want any celebrities in ACL. Period. No matter how good they are. I know this for a fact from conversations with his mother and brother. Yes, he'd have issues with Charlotte and Berresse, but for different reasons. If Bennett were alive, Lopez would not be in the show. And celebrity or not, Bennett would never allow an untrained dancer anywhere near the line.
Well, maybe I didn't know him as well as his mother and brother but I think the Michael I met would think it's a hoot.
What makes you say Mario is untrained? I assume Bob Avian and Baayork Lee cast him because his dancing was strong enough for the part of Zach.
No?
How much dancing does Zach do anyway?
"I assume Bob Avian and Baayork Lee cast him because his dancing was strong enough for the part of Zach."
No .. I am sure they cast him because they knew he would bolster sagging ticket sales. He saw the show, expressed interest in appearing in it, and there he is. Integrity and dancing ability flew out the window.
Zach SHOULD demonstrate a difficult part of the opening number ... I've seen various Zachs who have done leaps, splits in the air, jumps, etc. Eivand Harum (spelling???) was a Zach who danced the hell out of the role. Lopez may be good enough for Dancing with the Stars, but I highly doubt he's taken years and years of ballet and jazz classes that are normally a requirement of anyone appearing in a professional production of ACL. But Zach's dancing requirements, unfortunately, can be watered down to accommodate even the weakest of dancers, by having the Larry character take over the demonstrating instead of Zach.
"...I am sure they cast him because..."
So you ADMIT that you're talking out of your hat?
You have no knowledge of the decision-making process yet you post on an anonymous board putting words into their mouths?
Okay then. We can discount everything you say.

I love me some Mario for sure, but he looks too young and looks like he should be playing LARRY. Larry always had the best body and showed some muscle. He's athletic so he'll look ok doing some of the moves, but look at that turned in foot and untrained body doing that jump. Awful. They should have taken a picture of him in the Gold suit just tipping his hat.But then again, thats not what people want to see or why he was hired. He's all wrong. All wrong.
Okay. Michael would have LOVED this.
