you know what i've never quite understood about snotty sales people or waiters? the fact that they are sales people and waiters- not millionaires, not unber-intelligent beings, not movie stars, not broadway stars, not recording stars... just sales people. how big a difference is there in their salary (read: the persons at your local label joint) and that of the folks at the local j.crew? i tried to explain that to someone at jeffery's in ny once. "you don't understand, I'M the one with the money buying the jacket, YOU are the groundling! mmkay?"

Didn't this exact same story make the rounds last year. She couldn't find a dress, had to have one made at the last second. Yada, yada, yada. Start shopping early!

EXACTLY son. How can the same thing happen at the exact same time, 2 years in a row? Maybe she forgot that she already circulated this story last year? Like I said, it sure is getting her a s*itload of publicity, isn't it?

Ummmmm..... I don't think that would be the best publicity to have. "No you can't shop here.... You're too fat." Yeah, I'd really LOVE to be known for having trouble finding designer duds for awards shows. I think the point is that it actually happened two years in a row, even after last year's debacle, and after winning the Tony, STILL these people are stuck so far up their own a**es that they have to be rude, ignorant, and prejudiced. It's sick, but unfortunately, true and accepted. I think Marissa is getting well-deserved publicity for this nonsense. I wonder if Queen Latifah walked into those same stores if she'd be snubbed in the same way? Probably not, but then, she's "west-coast". Marissa should shop at designer boutiques in NY, where she is known, respected, and loved. I'm a "plus-sized" actress and model.... It totally pisses me off when I walk into a store and the salespeople look at me like "yeah right." I'd be raising hell too.

You'd have thought that all of the salespeople have seen 'Pretty Woman' and would be nice, just to be non-conformist.

Reminds me of the goth kids on that episode of 'South Park'.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe she walked in there and started singing. That would explain a lot. Anyway, it's getting the woman publicity, so she's probably not complaining.

It's AMAZING watching so many of you get worked up in a lather over this, but COME ON.

Oh, and Queen Latifah is not "west-coast," she was born in New Jersey. What makes you think snotty salespeople are nice to plus sized gals from the West Coast but nasty to everybody else?

Namo.... I meant she WORKS primarily in Hollywood and she's an Oscar Winner instead of a Tony Winner.... Mmmmmmkay? Damn, lets not get too mad about it. And I meant that they probably would have recognized Queen Latifah due to her Hollywood Star Status and not known who Marissa was, so they probably would have been less rude to Latifah. And it is true that unless they know who you are, they're going to be rude and snotty to you.... You said as much in your previous posts. The fact is that both are beautiful women and stars, regardless of their size, and they should be treated the same when they walk into a store as if they were Jennifer Aniston or Sarah Jessica Parker, but unfortunately, they're not.

i think namo is exactly rright and that this outrage is only possible because people are too focussed on the presidential election which we all know really isn't important when they ought to keep their eyes and energies directed at problems that really matter like chubby broadway babies being treated badly in stores that carry items that kost of us could not afford anyway. until the american people stop this maniacal fixation on the election and focus on the true problems confronting america today, like that of the treatment of plus sized actresses by store clerks, such horrific abuses will continue. personally i suggest that namo lead the charge at organizing an effective assault on the corridors of couture. oh yeah, and vote bush.

I totally feel for her, as we're similar sizes and I've encountered the inevitable prejudice from bitchy clerks...but come on....I'm ALL for making plus-size "acceptable" in the beauty myth world (and hope she is), but my cynicism tells me this is a publicity stunt.

No doubt this probably happened. BUT she might be a smart girl too. Not saying she did BUT last year she was a Tony nominee and designers would dress her, this year not so much so she had to shop for one...story comes out she now gets a free designer dress. if that is true then she is smart!

No salesperson would dare insult she who is Cohn. Mindy would have their heads for breakfast. And save the rest for lunch. Then a sensible dinner.

Namo - It's just an interesting article to talk about. No one is equating it to world affairs or the state of the Union. Why make such a fuss?

I stand corrected.... Oscar NOMINATED.... Sorry, let me put the revolver to my head now.... God forbid I should make a mistake in my post. But my semantics aren't the issue here, and it trivializes the issue, but then, perhaps I'm not supposed to have an opinion. *sigh* It's amazing how a few people can make others feel bad for caring about something that they might not be interested in. And funny how when the topic is discrimination in any form toward Gay people, tons of gay advocates jump on it, but when it's overweight people, it's trivial. Yes, it's just a store. Yes, it's just shopping. But it is discrimination.... against the majority of people in this country. *shrug* Whatever.... I guess I should know enough by now to just keep my mouth (keyboard drawer) shut.

I have trouble feeling sorry for someone that made sure to say in the press "I was ready to drop $10,000 on a dress!", and also had Anna Wintour to call for backup. I agree that this was for publicity, especially since she knows exactly what size she is and how hard it is to shop for her size. Like someone said before, start shopping earlier! Or if you have so much dang cash, have someone make you a dress! I have a friend who's a nominee this year and has been in years past and has nowhere near Marissa's cash and yet has been able to have gowns made for her for the Tonys.

Alot of it is about going to a store that carries clothing appropriate for your size. I just find it difficult to believe that she has been singled out for harassment in multiple stores, unless there's more to the story (attitude, perhaps?) Come on. She's a short, chubby young woman...but not exactly a poster child for gastric bypass surgery. Listening to her boo-hoo about discrimination when she had SO MUCH MONEY to spend just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I'm not say it didn't happen. I'm just saying that maybe there's more to the story.

Sweet Tea. Dear, sweet, persecuted Sweet Tea: "semantics" refers to words and their meanings, not about factual errors.

Believe me, I'm a big Marissa fan, love her. I'm completely in favor of everybody of every size getting to buy clothes that make them feel comfortable and in which they feel they look great. I'm not a fan of the unrealistic body images that are foisted by our culture, particularly at women. I'm on record on this issue, even on THIS message board, and have been long before you ever came around here (the controversial Julianna threads, anybody?).

Good for Marissa getting the story out there, getting her dress. But people wanting to capture this shoddy treatment that everybody KNOWS happens anyway and getting all riled up about it is just plain over the top and ultimately will amount to nothing.

OK, Namo.... I aggree with you there, but please understand that plus-sized people don't think it's trivial, and just because everyone knows it happens doesn't mean it shouldn't be addressed. The only way things change is if people start dealing with existing problems and stop letting them "blow over". As for my own personal feeling of being persecuted, it just seems to me that with the exception of one post I've made, the instant reaction of several people on this board has been to tear my post to shreds without looking at the deeper meaning of it or even addressing the issue at all. It seems as though if I ask a question or state an opinion, I'm setting myself up to get reamed. *shrug* But then again, what do I know.... Or care, for that matter. I suppose it doesn't really matter, it is in fact, just a message board. I guess I just got worked up over nothing.
